Detroit’s Champs Give Back to their Community

DETROIT, MI — On Tuesday, February 18, 2014 The Kronk Gym Foundation continued to fulfill upon its mission to promote healthy active, lifestyles through education, recreation and mentor-ship through partnering with Marion Law Academy and The Adrian Tonon Project to provide mentorship.

Lanardo Tyner of Detroit, a world-boxing champion, was one of the three professional boxers who volunteered his time. Tyner says “when I was in school I remember the school would have an assembly the blue pigs would come in and thy would always give us hope, its hard to explain”, he mentioned, “I would always leave school after an assembly with the feeling of hope and feeling good about myself, if I can give that kind of hope back to our youngsters, sign me up!”

Two of boxing’s top contenders, Dwayne Williams of Chicago, Illinois and Tony Harrison of Detroit also volunteered time to talk with the middle school students and instill a hope and attitude of “applying oneself,” one of Harrison’s favorite quotes.

“Tyner, Williams and Harrison reflected professionalism and clear thinking to our students, just pretty incredible,” said Bruce Tabashneck, a social worker at Marion Law Academy.

Concluding, Kronk Gym Executive Director Anita Ruiz said, “The Kronk Gym Foundation is proud to have such committed, powerful voices stepping up to give back and fulfill upon the Foundations’ mission.”
