As the career of the Pacific Northwest’s longtime top ranked heavyweight Chauncy Welliver nears its final stretch, the fighter known as the “Hillyard Hammer” has had no problem finding other things to occupy his time. Two years ago he opened his own gym, BoxFit in Spokane, Washington and has shifted his attention from competing to helping young fighters learn and navigate the boxing game, giving back to the local community that for so many years showed their devoted support. On Saturday, June 13th, Welliver will be looking to give back to that community in a big way with what is shaping up to be a high quality amateur show at Riverfront Park in Spokane, featuring some of the best local amateur talent the region has to offer. Most importantly, though, he will be providing this event free of charge. Titled “Rumble on the River,” the event will be the first ever boxing show held at the park.

The main event will feature a match-up pitting two of the best heavyweight amateurs in the country. USA Boxing’s 2015 National Heavyweight champion Patrick Ferguson, of Spokane, will meet two-time Golden Gloves Champion and Jr. Pan-Am Games Champion Matt Mollett, of Tacoma, WA in a fight that promises to deliver fierce action. Ferguson won the Elite Men’s National title this past January in Spokane, beating out some top notch opposition in surprising upsets. Ferguson is trained by Welliver and came to BoxFit two years ago with no boxing experience. After only ten amateur bouts, Ferguson was able to claim the top spot at Nationals.

His opponent Matt Mollet has had the distinction of winning Golden Gloves titles on two occasions, and claiming a Jr. Pan-Am Games title in 2014. He’s a fighter that many boxing insiders have placed very high hopes on due to the overall talent he has displayed in his young amateur career.

It is one of the most compelling plotlines in recent memory in northwest amateur boxing, two amateur heavyweight champions, both from Washington State in a fight for bragging rights.

“This is a match-up between two of amateur boxing’s most successful boxers today and they both happen to be in boxing’s glamour division and they’re both from Washington state,” said Welliver of the match-up. “This is a fight that needs to happen!”

In addition to the main event there will be a number of interesting fights on the card. Two top ten nationally ranked heavyweights will square off once again when Elvis Garcia faces Ramel Casablanca. The two have fought before, splitting two bouts at the 2013 Tacoma Golden Gloves. Ultimately, it was Casablanca who would claim the final victory, winning the tournament’s Super heavyweight division.

In a return bout of a fight that was named “Fight of the Tournament” at this year’s Tacoma Golden Gloves, Spokane’s Antonio Tessitore, of The Howard Street Boxing Club, will look to even the score against Tacoma Boxing Club’s Kevin Torres, who won their first bout in a close, all action fight, taking the 152 lbs. division title.

Also in action, USA boxing’s #5 ranked female Jill Erstad will take on fellow BoxFit stablemate Megan Lopez. Lewiston, Idaho’s Andrew Whitfield will take on Seattle’s Nikolas Vasquez and Boxfit team member Daniel Sosa will face-off with Great Falls, Montana’s Eddie Fernandez.

Twenty total bouts are scheduled with more to possibly be added.

In addition to live boxing, there will be plenty of other entertainment to keep the atmosphere going at this family friendly event. The show is scheduled to start at 1pm. Riverfront Park is located at 507 N. Howard St. in Spokane, WA.  The event is presented by BoxFit and sanctioned by the Inland Northwest Boxing Association.
