Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali

Ali is truly a universal figure; a man who authentically transcends cultural and geographical boundaries.

One may choose to focus on his extraordinary boxing skills or his strident social activism or his larger-than-life and media-friendly personality, but you cannot ultimately claim the man because you are from Louisville or are Black or an American or a Muslim. (continue reading…)

The phone would ring several times before reverting to the rich, baritone voice of an African-American male. It simply reminded the caller that if they were sure that they had reached their intended destination, then “you know what to do.” (continue reading…)

A common enough description of Floyd Mayweather by some followers of the sport of boxing is of being an extremely capable but ultimately ‘boring’ fighter.

Mayweather, by implication, does not provide such persons with a style which is pleasing to certain sensibilities.

LONDON, Saturday, December 15th – George Groves, the Commonwealth super-middleweight champion, floored Glen Johnson in the 12th and final round en route to a lop-sided unanimous decision.

The 24-year-old Groves was made to work hard at times by the wily, determined Johnson who coming into this bout had lost four of his last five fights. (continue reading…)

Eoin Redahan: There are countless American boxers of African ancestry in boxing’s Hall of Fame. Why do you think Africa has so few boxers in the Hall of Fame?

Most of them, I’d wager, would be able to trace their ancestry to parts of West and Central Africa, yet there is no corresponding success among their contemporaries from the ‘Motherland’. It’s likely to be down to the nurturing they receive in the early stages of their careers. Many African athletes do not have proper and adequate facilities in their home countries. Some go further to postulate genetic improvement. The forebears of those sold into slavery centuries before were often times captured warriors. Then only the strong survived the horrors of the middle passage. Maybe there’s an inkling of truth there, but I think it is more a case of having an environment within which training and nurturing expertise marries with latent talent and ambition.
