King Found Guilty of Breach of Contract Over Canceled Jones vs. Lebedev Bout

MANHATTAN, NY – According to www.boxingnewsnow@aol.com, a U.S. judge found promoter Don King liable for breach of contract over a canceled cruiserweight world championship pitting one of his fighters, former World Boxing Association World Cruiserweight Champion Guillermo Jones, against current champ Denis Lebedev on April 25th.  The bout was nixed when Jones failed a drug test.

Judge Scheindlin stated that the disqualification due to Jones testing positive for the diuretic furosemide hours before his scheduled fight in Moscow “plainly put King in breach” regardless of whether or not King had anything to do with the failed test. (continue reading…)

Miami, Florida – August 20, 2013 – On August 20, 2013, legendary boxing promoter Don King and top-rated heavyweight Fres Oquendo congratulated WBC President Jose Sulaiman at Miami’s City Hall as he received the Key to the City of Miami by Mayor Tomás Regalado.

“This was a great ceremony and Sulaiman is one of the guys who does it right in and out of boxing,” said Oquendo, who is currently the WBC U.S. Silver Champion and the fifth ranked heavyweight in the WBA. (continue reading…)

“The Sunshine Showdown”, 1973, has lost some of its luster due to the “Rumble In The Jungle”, 1974, and “Thrilla In Manila”, 1975. At the time of the bout, it appeared to be a weaker moment amongst world heavyweights. Only the undefeated champion, Joe Frazier, and a tarnished Muhammad Ali, held names of high recognition and esteem.

Within two years that perception would drastically alter so that this period is currently viewed as one of more beloved and respected eras of the heavyweight division. Don Dunphy proved once again that he is the best announcer in boxing history. But it was an impassioned (and nearly hysterical) Howard Cosell whose imprint permanently marked this sporting event.
