The Mercurial Life of Esteban de Jesus

The world’s most-diligent boxing historian, Christopher James Shelton, joined us on the May 18, 2014 edition of The Ringside Boxing Show to share the mercuiral and ultimately tragic story of Esteban de Jesus, the great Puerto Rican champion who decked Roberto Duran in two different fights, and put the first blemish on his record.

But the party scene lured de Jesus into the dark world of cocaine and heroin addictoin, a tailspin that culminated with a road-rage murder, a life sentence, and an early death from AIDS.

I am a Catholic Hispanic-American that has been attending an HIV/AIDS facility, Phoenix Shanti Group, since November, 2011. Shanti’s mission statement: “Founded back in 1987, our goal is to provide housing, education and direct client services to individuals, families and loved ones infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. ‘Shanti’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Inner Peace’ and is reflective of Phoenix Shanti Groups’ approach of promoting personal empowerment and maintaining independence and dignity.”

Many of us dream of celebrity sports fame, but only cruel individuals would desire the May 13th, 1989 Los Angeles Times headline for former WBC lightweight champion, Esteban de Jesus, on their worst enemy: “Drug Addict Who Had AIDS.
