Roach Expects Brawl

2010Aug04 — “In order to have enough you must have too much.”

This statement rings especially true when speaking of boxing trainers; coaches will build their stables with fighters of varying caliber all searching for that one big spotlight. More often than not, the fighter suffers from a teacher with little to no time to hone their individual talents.

As in every case, there are exceptions to the rule. Freddie Roach, boxing trainer extraordinaire, is that exception to this rule. Roach clearly has enough, yet hungers for more. Fresh off the “setback” of failed negotiations between arguably the best undefeated fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the sport’s premier megastar (whom happens to receive his instructions from Roach), boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, Roach is already looking towards his next assignment-Antonio Margarito.

Boxing Writers Association of America’s Dinner a Hit

 NEW YORK CITY – On Friday, June 12th at Capitale Café, the Boxing Writers Association held their Annual Dinner Award Ceremony.

Retired former WBA, WBC and WBO Super Middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe was awarded “Manager of the Year.”  He accepted gladly and joked that he’d much rather been given “Fighter of the Year” but was very happy to accept this award. He told the story how it wasn’t until he took over his own career that his three most important fights came as well as opportunity to fight at Madison Square Garden.  (continue reading…)

Hatton Camp Labels Freddie Roach Story ‘Absolute Nonsense’

Boxing websites and forums are buzzing with activity regarding trainer extraordinaire, Freddie Roach, and whom he may be training next.  In a story carried by Eastsideboxing.com, but originally posted on Ringtalk.com, James Slater writes that Manny Pacquaio’s trainer, Freddie Roach, is set to become the newest instructor for Manchester, England’s Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton.

I spoke moments ago with Hatton’s manager, Paul Speak, on the matter and he said
“There is no truth in the rumor.”
