Story by Christopher Morgan at ringside

LOS ANGELES, CA, December, 17, 2016 – Bernard Hopkins and Golden Boy promotions decided to develop and promote one final send-off to one of boxing’s most enduring legends. Over the last 28 years, Bernard Hopkins has been involved in and won the majority of his fights against the best fighters between 160 and 170 pounds.

The majority of the time Hopkins was an underdog in the eyes of the media and fans; before he relished in making a fool of everyone who doubted him. (continue reading…)

Joe Smith, at left, rocks Andrzej Fanfara.

CHICAGO, June 18, 2016 — He was a crude banger whose record was built on nobodies, in nothing towns, and across the ring was the established king — a future hall of famer — who’d battered and nearly knocked out Muhammad Ali nearly two years earlier. However, this didn’t stop a young George Foreman from bludgeoning Joe Frazier into submission that night in Kingston, Jamaica in January 1973.

Fast forward to tonight at the UIC Pavilion. Although Joe Smith, Jr. was a well decorated amateur (he won the 2008 New York Golden Gloves with a victory over Seanie Monaghan) he is no George Foreman (who won the Gold Medal at the 1968 Olympics as an amateur), but he’s a heavy handed slugger with a record of 21-1 with 17 knockouts against second rate opposition. Tonight, he’s facing Andrzej Fonfara, an established contender who dropped and went the distance in losing a decision for Adonis Stevenson’s WBC title in May 2014 and stopped the former WBC Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in April 2015. This should be a no-brainer.

Only it’s not. (continue reading…)

Lopez, Stark Jr., Collado, Ruiz and Mejias Score Victories; Caminero Scores Upset and Allen-Boone Ends in a Draw at Aviator Sports Center in Brooklyn, NY

BROOKLYN, NY, August 9, 2010 — It was a terrific night of boxing that saw explosive knockouts and bizarre finishes at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn that was capped off by former world title challenger, Reynaldo Lopez dropping for Bantamweight champion Mauricio Martinez three times in eighty-one seconds to capture the New York State Bantamweight championship.

After a slight delay before the main event, Lopez made up for last time as he dropped Martinez just seconds into the bout.  Martinez was never in the bout as he was on wobbly legs before being dropped for a second time.  Lopez finished the deal off with a booming over left that had Martinez plummet to the canvas as he banged his head on the canvas.  Martinez was down for several minutes before regaining his feet and being helped to the stool.
