Every boxer and trainer who has been in the game long enough can tell you about some guy that the overwhelming majority of boxing fans have never heard of before who has a story to tell. Every superstar boxer in the game knows of some guy from years gone by for whom they great respect. A guy he may have lost to during his formative years. A guy who impressed him with his skills, his talent, his power. Every boxing star wasn’t always the star. Along the way he lost fights to guys who were sharper, faster, stronger and, in some cases, just better.

Not everyone with superior skills and talent sees his way to the top of our game. Like the immensely talented but widely unknown to the masses Earl “The GOAT’ Manigault in basketball, boxing has plenty of guys who once upon a time had a memorable day in the sun that has been long been forgotten about by most. On Saturday,  August 15 at the Hard Rock restaurant inside Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut, I held my 3rd official amateur boxer reunion, and the turnout was spectacular. My first two reunions were held in Las Vegas last December with the likes of Alex Ramos, Mike McCallum, Lamon Brewster and Montell Griffin showing up and this past June in New York City, with former champions Junior Jones and Iran “The Blade” Barkley in attendance.

This one at the biggest casino in the world featured an even deeper guest list as the likes of “The Fighter” Mickey Ward and his brother Dickie Ecklund, former two-time welterweight champion Marlon Starling, 1996 and 2004 U.S. Olympic super heavyweights Lawrence Clay-Bey and Jason Estrada and “Poison” Junior Jones made their way in. ‘Iceman’ John Scully Interviews Former WBC Light Heavyweight Champ, Montell Griffin

by on May.22, 2015, under Boxing News

LAS VEGAS — I had always planned to interview Montell Griffin at some point in order to ask him about his relationship with the legendary trainer, Mr. Eddie Futch and when we both ended up in Las Vegas on May 2nd for Mayweather-Pacman I decided to do an on-the-spot video interview with him.

As often the case with great trainers, people often automatically name certain guys as their “best trainer ever” choice without even really having any idea as to why they are saying it. It’s like they just read it somewhere and then repeat it just to sound boxing-intelligent. On that end, I decided to let Montell give a little insight into Mr. Futch and what actually made him such a great trainer. (continue reading…)

‘Iceman’ John Scully Interviews IBF lightweight champ Mickey Bey in Las Vegas

by on May.09, 2015, under Boxing News

LAS VEGAS, NV, May 2, 2015 — Two hours after Floyd Mayweather decisioned Manny Pacquiao, former light heavyweight contender and current boxing trainer “Ice” John Scully met up with IBF Lightweight Champion Mickey Bey in the lobby of the MGM Grand Hotel.  This is his interview.  Of his encounter, he writes the following report:

“One reason I love to attend big fights is because of the fact that it usually evolves into a reunion of sorts for the boxers and former boxers in attendance. Many times the events surrounding the fights are more memorable than the actual fights themselves. This past weekend in Las Vegas, for example, I spent a lot of time in the MGM Grand hotel lobby running into and reminiscing with many friends from within the boxing game. (continue reading…)
