Virginia Fuchs

1. Virginia Fuchs 112 lbs.

Nationally ranked Number Two Flyweight by USA Boxing. Southpaw Fuchs has made big strides in the last year as she has shored up and stabilized both her offense and defense. She has lost three straight years in the USA Boxing national championship finals to AIBA World Flyweight Champion Marlen Esparza. With a little more hustle, she would have beaten Marlen a couple of times as there have been two very controversial decisions in the series of fights between them.

Fuchs dropped Esparza in the National PAL Championship finals with a straight left hand. But an aged, visually challenged senior citizen referee failed to see the punch which happened right in front of him. She will get her final chance at The Champion in October at the Olympic Trials. Fuchs trains at former Unified Lightweight Boxing Champion Juan Diazs’ Baby Bull Gym and is representing the United States as of this writing in a U.S. versus China tournament in Atlanta. Marlen Esparza made boxing history in Spokane, Washington at the USA National Boxing Championships on Saturday by becoming the sport’s first 9 time National Champion. The determined flyweight gladiator once again fought off a strong challenge from her nemesis, Ginny Fuchs and captured the outstanding fighter award of the tournament.

Esparza out boxed and out hustled Fuchs in a tough battle and has added a new dynamic to her ring style. She is a far more versatile fighter than the one I first encountered some five years ago. She pivoted off of 90 and 45 degree angles and used her torso movement and footwork to slip most of Fuch’s heavy shots. (continue reading…)
