NEW YORK CITY — His heavyweight fight versus Cuban by way of Ireland’s Mike Perez was an action-packed war and fitting for the supporting act of the Gennady Golovkin-Curtis Stevens showdown for Golovkins World Boxing Association belt.  Both took heavy, flush shots, but in surviving a withering assault down the stretch to lose by unanimous decision, Russian Magomed Abdusalamov, 32, has come close to paying the ultimate price.

Former Chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission and Editor-in-Chief for The Ring Magazine Randy Gordon has reported that Abdusalamov is “currently in a medically-induced coma” at New York City’s Roosevelt Hospital.

His face swollen into a grotesque mask, Abdusalamov complained to his corner of facial pain throughout the bout.

God speed, Mr. Abdusalamov.
