Chicago Boxers’ Reunion a Smash!

This past Friday, on August 19th at Bourbon Street in south suburban Chicago, I had the pleasure of attending the 2nd annual Chicago Boxer’s Reunion. And let me tell ya, I was like a kid in a friggin’ candy store.

This reunion was not ‘fighter inclusive’. It was open to the official, the writer and most of all, the fan. It was just as well, as I did not have the lengthy career some of these stalwarts of pug-alley experienced. However, they made me feel as welcome as a unanimous decision in their favor. Former WBC Light Heavyweight Champion, Montell Griffin, is among those scheduled to attend the Chicago’s Boxer’s Reunion.

MERRIONETTE PARK, IL — On Friday August 19th at the Bourbon Street night club in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, the second annual Chicago Boxer’s Reunion will convene. The reunion is the brainchild of former Chicago amateur sensation Vince ‘Rock’ Hudson, who has organized the reunion in his efforts to bring together these great combatants from pug-alley who have lost touch with one another for one rocking hash session.

Not to be confused with some members only event, this reunion is open to not only the fighter, but also the announcers, the officials, the writers and of course the fan of Chicago boxing. (continue reading…)

This will be my 4th official amateur boxers reunion, with the first three having taken place in Las Vegas (December 2014), New York City (June 2015) and Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut (July 2015).

Boxers who have attended previous reunions include the likes of four-time world champion Roy Jones Jr., three-time world champions Mike “The Body Snatcher” McCallum and Iran “The Blade” Barkley, WBO heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster, former WBC light heavyweight champion Montell “Ice” Griffin, 1988 U.S. Olympic coach Kenny Adams. Every boxer and trainer who has been in the game long enough can tell you about some guy that the overwhelming majority of boxing fans have never heard of before who has a story to tell. Every superstar boxer in the game knows of some guy from years gone by for whom they great respect. A guy he may have lost to during his formative years. A guy who impressed him with his skills, his talent, his power. Every boxing star wasn’t always the star. Along the way he lost fights to guys who were sharper, faster, stronger and, in some cases, just better.

Not everyone with superior skills and talent sees his way to the top of our game. Like the immensely talented but widely unknown to the masses Earl “The GOAT’ Manigault in basketball, boxing has plenty of guys who once upon a time had a memorable day in the sun that has been long been forgotten about by most. LAS VEGAS, December 13, 2014 — Some of the former amateur boxing champions who participated in “John Scully’s 1st Official Amateur Boxing Reunion” earlier in the day at the Rival Boxing Store on Sunset Road in Las Vegas pose in the lobby of the MGM Grand that night after taking in the Amir Khan-Devon Alexander world title fight.
