Coster was a talented featherweight contender and title claimant during the early years of last century; He fought twice in bouts promoted as World Championship contests, winning against Frankie Conley in 1911; Early in his career, Coster was managed by his brother, Jack; His brother, Salvatore, known as  "Taddo", was also a boxer

During his career, Joe defeated such men as Conley, Joe Wagner, Kid Bernstein, and Patsy Callahan; In addition, he scored a large number of "newspaper wins" in the "No Decision" bouts he fought

After retiring from the ring, Coster (Agnello) became a boxing judge in New York and was one of the judges in the famous legal case brought by Joey Giardello (1953) following his bout with Billy Graham
