Carroll was a tough customer who usually won his bouts; Carroll wrestled at one time in his career and had "bowed" shoulders as result; He was very strong and moved quickly but made "round-arm" (roundhouse) swings

During his career, he defeated such men as Mike Lucie, "Australian" Billy Smith, Billy McCarthy, Dick Collier, James "Ginger" McCormick and Jack Brady
