Dawson was an extremely talented fighter with a natural feel for handling himself in the ring; He was quick and shifty and carried a solid punch; George was the Lightweight Champion of Australia during his career

He defeated such men as Billy "Shadow" Maber, Jim "Iron Bark" Burge, Billy Gallagher, Danny Needham, Doc O'Connell, Hughie Napier and Ambrose Taylor

          to win the Amateur Championship of Queensland
