(the "Cincinnati Cobra")

BORN   July 7 1921; Lawrenceville, Georgia
DIED May 27 1975; Chicago, Illinois
HEIGHT 6-0
WEIGHT 160-204 lbs
MANAGERS Bert Williams and Charles Dyer (Some sources report Jake Mintz and Tom Tannas)
TRAINER Ray Arcel
RECORD 96-25-1 (58 KO)

Charles was an excellent fighter - Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight; He fought up through the ranks, tangled with the very best long the way and gained victories over them all - Charley Burley, Joey Maxim, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshall, Archie Moore, "Jersey" Joe Walcott, Gus Lesnevich, Freddie Beshore, an older Joe Louis and Lee Oma - to name a few

Basically a Cruiserweight at his heaviest, he won the Heavyweight Championship and then defended it 8 times; During his career, he fought for the Heavyweight Championship 13 times and was the only man to ever last 15 rounds against Rocky Marciano

Herb Goldman ranked Charles as the #3 All-Time Light Heavyweight; He was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1970 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990
