Len Johnson

BORN   October 22 1902; Manchester, England
DIED September 28 1974;
WEIGHT 155 1/2-160 lbs
MANAGER Bill Johnson (father)

Johnson was a talented and capable fighter who fought during a period of very good fighters; He was a boxer-type and not a power hitter; Len lost only 30 of 128 bouts and scored just 36 knockouts; He held his own with the best and won the Middleweight Championship of the British Empire (Commonwealth) as recognized by Australia during his career; It was not recognized in Great Britain because the BBBC enforced a "color bar" that required parents of a fighter to be white; A number of his contests were never entered into his official record

Len defeated such men as Ted "Kid" Lewis, Len Harvey, Jack London, Jack Etienne, Michele Bonaglia, Roland Todd, "Sunny" Jim Williams, Tommy Uren, Ignacio Ara, "Tiger" Jack Payne, Leone Jacovacci (Jack Walker), Harry Collins, Herman van't Hof, Bob Carvill, Billy "Gypsey" Daniels, Piet Brand and Joe Bloomfield
