Nickless was quick and scrappy and held the 10 Stone (140 lbs) championship of England during his career; It was reported that in the late 1890s, he was placed in a mental home in England

He defeated such men as Johnny Robinson, Bill Hatcher, Jem Sullivan, Alf Suffolk, Jem Townsend and George Baxter
