Thompson was a fire ball of a fighter - a buzzsaw, a hammer; He was not overly impressive with his boxing skills but was aggressive, applied pressure and punched hard; Johnny claimed the Middleweight Championship of the World during his career

The "Cyclone" defeated such men as Billy Papke, Jack Lester, "Fighting" Dick Hyland, Jack Clifford, Maurice Thompson, Rufe Turner, Rudi Unholz, Peter Sullivan, Hughie Mehegan, Jerry Jerome and Charlie "Kid" Dalton

Some sources report that Thompson started his professional career in 1892
