Gil McDougald, an outstanding, versatile infielder who played for the New York Yankees from 1951 to 1960, passed away at the age of 82 last Sunday after a bout with prostate cancer. Overshadowed by Yankee stars such as Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, McDougald never got enough credit for his top-notch defensive skills while playing at shortstop, second base and third base in addition to making valuable contributions as a hitter during a period when the Yankees won five World Series and eight American League pennants.
