"Old Bones" Brown was and still is an underappreciated fighter.
Personally I have him as one of my favorites.
He had a very interesting career and was involved in many great battles.
I wish someone would do a book on him.

old joe did alot and mean alot of business--but he was great.

Joe Brown was one of the better lightweight champions.
He was a top level boxer and a KO puncher.
He defended his title successfully ELEVEN times, and held the title for FIVE years.
Films show he was a vicious puncher when he was younger, before he won the title.
He beat a number of welterweights including Virgil Akins (twice) and Isaac Logart.
He fought in four decades--from 1943 to 1970
Here are his title fights:
1956
1---Aug 24 Wallace "Bud" Smith New Orleans W 15
(Won World Lightweight Title)
1957
2---Feb 13 Wallace "Bud" Smith Miami KO 11

I seen Old Bone fight in person 3 times, I seen him fight Tommy Campbell in 1951 at the Olympic Auditorium a fight he lost, then I was at the Ocean Park Arena when he fought Baby Ortiz a fight he won, after that I seen him fight Cisco Andrade (1960) also at the Olympic, and in between I seen most of his fight that were on t.v.

I've read that Joe was already a little past his best when he won the title would you agree with this?.... I've seen a few of his fights but none from before he won the title...

Yes I would agree that he was past his best when he won the title, I believe that he was in his prime in the early 50s.
