I have been wanting to put this list together for a while now, but just can't seem to get started, so I only have two men listed, but I think it would be a worth-while list to put together and I will edit in all the names that people list. I'm also certain that the total number of Ring belts that were issued go well over 150, so I will edit that as the names and numbers come in!

This might be tough -- I am not sure if they numbered them chronologically by date of fight or when actually presented.

Another good project might be Ring Magazine prospects of the month

if they are numbered i believe mando ramos was the last to be awarded the ring belt...1969 for dethroning teo cruz for the worlds lighweight title. at least he told me that once .

Prospects of the month...

I have always thought that would be an excellent book and great seller! If the Ring would put in book form, ALL of their Annual Ratings, each years most dominent Champions - with mini profile and prospects of the month again with mini profiles and pictures.

I think it would make a great resource book and interesting reading, kinda like the Boxing Register only more insight into contenders and other fighters. Also making it easy for 'locating' unknown or forgotten fighters for research because so many would be listed by the dates and times they fought in of course.

If I had the money to pay my bills I'd put it together myself.
Jim.

I hadn't thought about Ring Magazine prospects of the month, but I'll try to get started on that list. As to the numbering, I don't know if they often numbered the titles, but I do know that I have seen many different instances where a photo of Nat Fleischer is handing a champ a title with a caption stating the number of belt that is being awarded. I don't know if they did this from the beginning, but I have seen the number listed in several 1930s issues of Ring!

I really like the idea of listing the Prospects of the Month though and I'll start that list here in a few minutes and post the prelim list as well as the issues of Ring mag that I can cover!

Barry, Check out the index from the old RING RECORD BOOKS and every year up to the 1979 edition they posted the names and numbers of the RING BELTS that were issued from 1952 thru 1978. I know Tommy Loughran was issued the first Ring Belt back in either '29 or '30. I hope this helps your research.

The only problem with listing "New Faces" is that the old RING mags would sometimes have maybe three different articles in the same issue with bios and photos of boxers one under "New Faces, another under maybe "California (or mid-west or Eastern, Southern) Prospects" still another of "Popular Club Fighters" all in the same issue some times. We sometimes forget how much great information was in the old RING magazines and RRB's.

I have made copies of all the RING "Prospects of the Month" that listed any Philly boxer with the group but passed on copying all of the lists-price of copy ink cartridges being what they are.

Thanks for the info Chuck! I never realized that the Ring belts were listed in the past RRB, but that should take care of a big gap of the list. I had wondered about the first belt that was issued and I remember reading about it in the past, but I had forgotten who the fighter was...I was guessing that it would have been Dempsey, but I seem to recall that it was Louhgran now that you mentioned it!

As to all the little bio-sketches, which I know that you already know, through the 1942 issues it was mainly just "New Faces" and "Making the Grade," which "Making the Grade" seemd to list contenders, or fighters that were very close to being main events fighters whereas the "New Faces" were just that, most of which in that year did not ever really make a name for themselves in the ring!

New faces index is a monster -- I was thinking just the prospects of the month -- the list that would accompany the ratings!!

But, hey, New faces also, why not!

When did the prospects of the month start? I was thinking sometime in the 60s, but I'm just guessing off the top of my head. Another list that I thought about doing a while back was listing and index of all the fighters who have a photo in Ring.

Well Barry, your work is cut out for you because the RING prospects of the month started in the 1920's. Good luck.
