I assume these are the rankings for the beginning of each year?

No, December 31 1899 Would Be The Listing For 1899(year-end)

Okay, then I have a concern for the 1900 ranking. You have Sharkey as top contender after Jeffries. But Sharkey was kayoed by Ruhlin and Fitz in 1900. You might consider placing him lower.

Matt:

Cleaned up the double posts. Don't worry about it it's just the curse of the board . We're working on getting it fixed.

Btw: Facinating lists & I'm not a big list guy!

Thanks GorDoom. I'm a sad "lists" person i must admit but in a way these are not arbitary lists but an attempt to establish what the rating should or would have been at the time. However all rating lists are of themselves arbitary if you follow that convoluted logic!
Either way I intend to complete the task of reaching 1924 and actually have allready found the ratings useful for myself when doing research.

Champion Dempsey
2 Wills(2)
3 Gibbons(3)
4 Tunney
5 Greb
6 Rojas(5)
7 Weinert(4)
8 Renault (6)
9 Firpo (7)
10 Burke
Ring rated Tunney as LightHeavy weight no.1 and Greb as Middleweight Champion so i was surprised to see that the Ring ratings seemed fair dispite allegations of influnce by Rickard and Jacobs.

Buried inside these fascinating Top-10 lists is a very cool trivia question: Name the fighter who interrupted the world title reign of James J. Corbett. I don't believe that any modern record book lists Peter Maher as a former heavyweight champion, but he had a legitimate (if disputed) hold on the title. When Fitz fought Maher in that mysterious fight a stone's throw from Judge Roy Bean's clip joint, Maher was considered the incumbent champion. Fitz was a very small favorite even though he had previously TKOed Maher, odds that seem incongruent in hindsight as Maher was subsequently exposed as a china-chinned plug-ugly with very little in his arsenal other than a fearsome left hook. I like this new cbz category.
