Just back from a flash trip to beautiful San Diego, my adopted home town for 30 years.
I must say I really am sorry I did not get to see your two terrific youngsters in their prime with old friend Don Chargin doing the matchmaking for them. Since I have two boys of my own, I know how proud you must be of yours entering the Hall of Fame together. Good job, methinks, Mr. B.
On an earlier post Jake Horn's name was mentioned. I remember when that huge hunk of humanity entered the boxing business during my tenure at the Legion Stadium. He came to me visibly upset because he had just laid out a large price for a youngster of some promise, Georgie Mendoza, whose contract he bought from Bert Lewis and George Tolson. I think Georgie retired prematurely.
Again Mr. B., my congratulations to you and your two sons.

Thanks Hap, yes Jake Horn! Jake was a good friend of mine from the late 50s until his death.
I loved the man but I would not get in a car if he was driving.
He had only one speed and that was FAST!!!!!!!!

I just read an interview with Tony on a site called Ringside Report. Nice interview and I think it's great what Tony is trying to do with his foundation.

I hope you're doing well -- I was thinking of you today because I purchased a couple of old boxing programs featuring Enrique Bolanos... I seem to remember you had good things to say about him... what was he like as a fighter? Did Ike Williams just have his number?

The only one that kept Enrique Bolanos from been a champion was Ike Williams, Bolanos was a great boxer-puncher.
I remember that as a young teenager in 1948 and then again in 1949 my dad taking me to see Williams and Bolanos fight for the LW title.
At that time Bolanos was my hero, so I felt bad when he lost to Williams. but later on I came to realise that Bolanos lost to Williams because Williams was just too great of a fighter, so I don't have no doubts what so ever that if he was fighting in this day and age he would be a champion.

back when billy backus and company came to L.A. to defend his welterweight title against jose napoles i was at the elks buiding watching them train. when enrique bolanos showed up carmen basilio grabbed him by the elbow all excited and dragged him over to meet backus saying " billy! this is enrique bolanos... A GREAT LIGHTWEIGHT ! "....can't get higher praise than that.

this is the california boxing hall of fame. tony and frankie baltazar started boxing amateur in california when they were knee high to a grasshopper and were respected names in CALIFORNIA boxing their entire lives. if you grew up in L.A. the baltazar name was one of the most prominent in the boxing game. they were good solid performers as pros and they were famous in L.A. boxing circles. it is called the california boxing hall of FAME and they deserve their notice.

Mr. B -- I collect boxing memorabilia like crazy (hey, I needed a hobby after giving up drinking) and it definitely was one of your posts that turned my attention to Enrique Bolanos -- I have a couple of beautiful programs, the nicest one from his win over Eddie Prince in 1947. Mr. B, do you know how Enrique is doing these days? He's 81 I think...
