Frank, thanks for the memories on one of the truly great welterweight fights of all time. I remember this series that used to run in world and International Boxing. I also remember catching the mistake on the 3rd page down. That photo of Muniz in the white trunks is from the rematch. Amazingly, what they fail to mention is the fact that Muniz dropped Carlos in the 1st round. Man, to this day I never thought Muniz would have lost to Carlos. I thought the style was made for him.
Dan
Frank- At the Olympic Auditorium, I was
watching Palomino-Muniz I while in the
balcony. As a recall, I paid ten bucks
for the ticket.

Chuck
That was a great fight for ten bucks , i remember siting in the balcony for the Art Aragon v Jimmy Carter LW title fight in 1951, cost ? five bucks,Chuck, i'm telling you those were the days to watch a great fight for very little money, up to the early 80's you could go to the Olympic Auditorium an not spent your rent money an still see some good fights
Frank B.
P.S i was there too for the Carlos v Mando fight
I watched it a bit further away, Chuck; on "Boxing From The Olympic" syndicated on KTVU in Oakland at 1am on a Saturday night. Jim Healy always made the fights dramatic, expecially that KO call he had..."It's Allllllllllll Ooooover!" KTVU ran the same commercial for a bay area Mexican restaurant all night long at every single break. It truly was "Boxing After Dark".
Frank- It is my understanding that Carlos Palomino
got a purse of about $60,000. for his first bout with
Muniz.
- Chuck Johnston
Chuck-i think that about right,
but i don't know for sure
Frank B.
I was in the 6th row ringside for the rematch and tickets were $25. Got my moneys worth. Left the arena horse!![]()
I saw both fights between Carlos Palomino and
Armando Muniz in person. In my opinion, the
second fight was not nearly as good as the
first one. One reason is that Palomino won
the second bout easily as Muniz seemed to
become old overnight.
- Chuck Johnston
It must have been somethin to watch that fight live.
What did you guy's think of Muniz? Should he of won that fight or was Palomino just a bit too good for him?
Was he really damaged goods for the rematch where he lost clearly on points?
I guess Muniz's reputation at the time of the first Palomino fight must have been quite fearsome given the hard battles he gave Napoles...
JimmyShimmy- Armando Muniz is one fighter who
who got the most out what he had. After all,
Muniz wasn't quick, athletic, or a good puncher.
In addition, he had little in the way of boxing skills.
But Muniz was able to become a top welterweight
due to his heart and durability. Moreover, he
applied relentless pressure on his opponents.
Have you seen a tape of the first bout between
Armando Muniz and Jose Napoles? Muniz was
winning handily and had Napoles in a helpless
state before the referee bailed out Napoles
by disqualifying Muniz! Believe me, the result
of that bout was controversial in the Los
Angeles area. Napoles gave Muniz a beating
in their second bout, but the fact remains that
Muniz didn't become the World Welterweight
Champion because of the referee's decision in
their first bout.
I think that Napoles was going downhill by the
time he fought Muniz twice. In other words,
I think that Napoles in his prime would have
had little trouble with Muniz.
Don't get me wrong....Muniz is one of my
favorite fighters. But I am not kidding myself.
- Chuck Johnston
I think that Carlos Palomino had much more in the
way of skills, talent, and punching power than
Armando Muniz. Of course, Muniz got off to a
quick start in the first bout with Palomino, but
Palomino came on very strong in the latter part
of the bout.
Palomino didn't have as much in the way of
boxing skills as Jose Napoles, Roberto Duran,
Ray Leonard, Wilfredo Benitez, or Thomas
Hearns. However, Palomino DID have some
skills, much more than another top welterweight
of the time, Pipino Cuevas.
