I have to agree with what Gor said earlier about them letting ANYONE be a boxing writer. This particular scribe isn't lacking talent, just anything even remotely resembling historical perspective. No Zivic? No Mysterious Billy Smith?

And Sonny Liston is one of the top 5 dirtiest of all time??

This gent has a lot of homework to do.

Re: Mike Tyson & The 5 Dirtiest Fighters All Time

The inclusion of Liston is a joke.

Based essentially on the circumstantial visual evidence of ONE fight, amplified by Ali's own histrionic reaction and accusation.

Yes, at one point, Ali's eyes were clearly irritated. However, this irritation appears to have occurred between rounds 4 and 5, NOT during in-round action (the television telecast cuts back during the break between rounds 4 & 5 when Ali's eyes are already well irritated - problematic edit as per Cooper fight). Working back to the last visual point, can Ali be seen blinking during any point of round 4 or only at some point between rounds 4 and 5? There has been suggestion that Dundee himself may have accidentally used a contaminated towel on Ali between rounds.

As to Liston being "guilty" of this practice in two other fights. As I recall reading, both Folley and Machen jumped the band wagon of suspicion with their own claims of falling victim to a caustic agent deliberately wiped on Liston's gloves. As I understand it, these claims only came to light AFTER the Miami fight, NOT before.

At any rate, here a couple of articles pulled from Google News. In the first article, an 82 yo Dundee indicates that he does not believe that Liston deliberately tried to blind Ali - however, Dundee still attributes the cause to either monsel or linament applied to Liston.

In the second article written post Miami, Eddie Machen, somehow unimpressed with Ali's performance, "jumps" the bandwagon claiming that Liston pulled the same "trick" on him but, unlike the histrionic Ali, Machen didn't make the mistake of allowing Liston to know that he was affected by it. Suffice to say, Machen did a GREAT job of "hiding" it because he doesn't appear to suffer any undue issues with his eyes during the course of his bout v Liston and didn't make any noises about same until AFTER Miami.

Likely a disingenuous, opportunistic attempt by Machen to both excuse his long since passed loss to Liston and somehow raise his own stock (relative to Ali) at the same time.
