    chuck,
i once heard joe frazier say that one of the best fighters he ever saw was gypsy joe harris. didn't he retire early because of an eye injury? what was the dope on this guy. is there any tape on him?

You've got to be kidding me.

P4P, hopkins is the most complete fighter to ever come out of Philly. Joe Frazier? P4P #1? I'm from Philly and I'd smack a motherf*cker into UJersey if they came around talking about that one-dimensional Frazier being Philly's P4P #1. got two words for Joe Frazier -- "GEORGE FOREMAN"! A P4P great should never get embarassed like that.

There are a number of guys on that list that are P4P better than Frazier, and I would throw Hopkins atop all.

i'm not convinced bernard hopkins is even one of the 10 best ever to come out of philly. does he really rate ahead of guys like:

    Harold Johnson
    Bob Montgomery
    Midget Wolgast
    Lew Tendler
    George Benton
    Jeff Chandler
    Bennie Briscoe
    Benny Bass
    Joe Frazier
    Joey Giardello
    Gypsy Joe Harris

I noticed that Dwight Muhammad Qawi is not categorized as a Philly fighter on this website. Why is that? I always thought that Qawi trained out of Philly, and was a Philly-based boxer even though he lived in nearly Camden, NJ.

Re: PHILADELPHIA ALL-TIME POUND FOR POUND RATINGS

Ike Williams, Jersey Joe Walcott, Qawi and others were all considered Philly fighters and trained there but never had a residence there. Rossman lived there for a time and his family roots were in Phila. George Godfrey kept an apt. in Phila, along with his residence in nearby Leiperville.
Of course Kenmore these ratings are all subjective and are open on phillyboxinghistory.com to anyone who wants to post their own Philly ratings and you are more than welcome to do so with your own parameters. Our ratings on the website are just individual opinions to spark dicussion and interest.
    Best wishes

Hopkins, Saad Muhammad, and Montgomery should be higher. I think Chandler's a bit high.

Re: PHILADELPHIA ALL-TIME POUND FOR POUND RATINGS

In answer to this, I thought I'd post the list for Philly's Western counterpart. So here it is:

PITTSBURGH ALL-TIME POUND FOR POUND RATINGS:

    1-Harry Greb
    2-Charley Burley
    3-Billy Conn
    4-Teddy Yarosz
    5-Sammy Angott
    6-Wee Willie Davies
    7-Jackie Wilson
    8-Frank Klaus
    9-Billy Soose
    10-Fritzie Zivic
    11-George Chip
    12-Tommy Yarosz
    13-Jimmy Thomas
    14-Tom McMahon
    15-Buck Crouse
    16-Lee Sala
    17-Johnny Ray
    18-Patsy Brannigan
    19-Dominick McCaffrey
    20-Jack McClelland
    21-Bob Baker
    22-Cuddy DeMarco
    23-Curtis "Hatchetman" Sheppard
    24-Harry Bobo
    25-Frank Moran
    26-Mose Butch
    27-Tony Marino
    28-Red Bruce
    29-Emmett Rocco
    30-Tommy Spiegal
    31-Paul Spadafora
    32-Juste Fontaine
    33-Battling Terry
    34-Young Rudy
    35-Tony Ross

I'm pretty strong on the top 10. The rest you can argue higher and lower placings.

Zivic seems much too low Surf, behind the likes of Frank Klaus, Billy Soose, and Jackie Wilson?

Re: PHILADELPHIA ALL-TIME POUND FOR POUND RATINGS

Maybe putting him below Soose was a bit of a slip up. I may have just mentally put too much weight on Billy's big win over Tony Zale; a career highlight. But Wilson and Klaus you could make cases for over Fritzie as both beat several great fighters. Fritzie was just so darn inconsistent!

Klaus's wins over World Champions Jack Dillon(twice), Georges Carpentier and Billy Papke as well as title claimants such as Leo Houck, Frank Mantell, Cyclone Johnny Thompson and Jack "Twin" Sullivan put him pretty high on any list. The talent pool was pretty deep in the post-Ketchel middleweight era.
