and only in the Sasakatoon Star-Phoenix.
This installment is from April-16-1929 .
I dont know if its the first installment.

This is gold. One of the most articulate, erudite fighters ever. Oh for a heavyweight champion like him today.
I have to say, I find myself agreeing with his assessment of Dempsey...
in this installment Jack Johnson's refers to Joe Walcott as the greatest fighter "of all time".

Love the comments about Sam Langford in that article about Dempsey.
Hey Overhand right, cmdoyle or would anyone here have a scanner to scan all of the available installments and download here for referance ?
For some reason I can not directly link some of the more interesting installments to this page.
It may have something to do with google having stopped digitizing their newspaper project about 2 years ago.
As near as I can tell installment one of Jack Johnson's own story appears in the April.11.1929 Saskatoon Daily-Phoenix
and the last installment(#18) appears in the May.8.1929 issue.
However if you browse the Saskatoon Daily-Phoenix I was able to locate at least 16 of the 18 installments between those dates.
The ones I could not link up to were.
April-19-going to see Steve Brodie in NYC and going to Boston to meet Joe Walcott
April-22-seeing Jim J Corbett for the first time(at the Gaelston Opera House in his stage show
April.27(Johnson ranks the heaavies, names Fitzsimmons number one)
April-29-Discusses Tom Sharky and how underappreciated he was as a fighter)
April-30-talks about Terrible Terry McGovern
May-1-his thoughts and fights with the Jeffries brothers
May-2-Joe Grim"the original iron-man
May-3-talks about his fight with Willard and how he"threw"the fight
May-4-talks about why he chose to marry white women

I see where a reference was made to finding 16 of 18 installments. The dates I find for the installments on this thread thus far are as follows:
4-16
4-17
4-18
4-19 (unlike the other articles the one that ran on 4-19 installment doesn't indicate at the end the subject of the next installment so I wonder if any article is missing from 4/20 or 4/21)
4-22
4-24 (This is the article referred to as being next at the end of the 4-22 article)
4-25
4-26
4-27
4-29 (This is the article referred to as being next at the end of the 4-27 article)
4-30
5-1
5-2
5-3
5-4 (This one ends with a reference to the article that is to appear in the next day's paper written by Jack's wife Irene Johnson but we don't have a link to that one in this thread.)
Anybody found any of the missing installments?
Hi Brutu,
I have managed to find 17 articles & can link directly to them. I am missing one article & then I can post all links in sequential order. April 25th is listed as article number 8 - you mentioned that this series starts on 11th April. If this is the case can you tell me what page number it is on in google or if you have found one not listed in the dates below, advise including article page number.
April 16,17,18,19,22,24,25,26,27,28,30
May 1,2,3,4,6,8
Regards
Scribbs
I have checked from the 1st April 1929 but cannot find the 18th article. The missing article would seem to be before 24th April.
The 25th (listed number 7 below) is listed as instalment No.8 and the 30th (listed number 11 below) is the 12th instalment.
On the 21st no editions were printed. It may have been omitted from print or I have overlooked it. The 8th May is the last installment of the series

I think the missing newspaper editions of the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix are
April-21-1929,April-28-1929 and May-5-1929.
Most likely the missing installment is in one of those issues ,April-21.
Too bad,it sounds to me like this series may have only appeared in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix,
which had sole rights to it and thats why it is not more widely knwn.

Actually, I think that there is now only one installment missing from the articles posted in this thread. I took the trouble of retyping each article linked in this thread and ended up with a total of 17 from the series of 18 as follows:
April 16, 1929 - Installment No. 1
April 17, 1929 - Installment No. 2
April 18, 1929 - Installment No. 3
April 19, 1929 - Installment No. 4
Installment No 5 - Missing
April 22, 1929 - Installment No. 6
April 24, 1929 - Installment No. 7
April 25, 1929 - Installment No. 8
April 26, 1929 - Installment No. 9
April 27, 1929 - Installment No. 10
Aprill 29, 1929 - Installment No. 11
April 30, 1929 - Installment No. 12
May 1, 1929 - Installment No. 13
May 2, 1929 - Installment No. 14
May 3, 1929 - Installment No. 15
May 4, 1929 - Installment No. 16
May 6, 1929 - Installment No. 17
May 8, 1929 - Installment No. 18
Thanks for posting the links to all of these, great stuff.
No probs.
Actually Geoffrey Ward does mention this series (barely) in his book UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS.
However curiously he only cites one of the articles(the Mason-Dixon line).
and doesnt mention in the bibliography anyway that it was one article in a series, but he does mention it in the first chapter the series
(that came out of someones private collection)Ward states that Jack Johnson"cooperated with the series"
,However Im not sure how Ward would know himself
to what extent Jack Johnson was or wasnt involved in it.
Ive got to say in reading it,it sort of wooden and lacks the flavour
and syntax and collooquialisms that one gets when they read his 1927 autobiography IN THE RING AND OUT
or his 1911 "French memoirs" MY LIFE AND BATTLESwhich one could tell was the same person speaking.
But my guess would be because possibly he had dictated it to someone to write down(perhaps to his wife Irene Johnson)
and they just wrote down the facts and opinions that he talked about and then they rewrote
it in their own manner and so a lot of the flavour was lost some in the translation.
Hey Brutu
Maybe I'm not reading properly (I thought it might've been merged with this thread) but I can't find the link (originally posted in a separate thread) that you previously posted for what I think was the 1910 English version of Johnson's MY LIFE AND BATTLES.
Thanks
