    The first championship and 15-round match ever conducted in Seattle and the state (pursuant to new boxing legislation effective June 8). Promoter: Nate Druxman. Israel was battered down three times. "The closest the Seattle youngster came to the N.B.A. championship was his claim to a foul in the third when he was flattened with a left uppercut to the body. He writhed and rolled on the canvas while many of the approximately 7000 fans yelled 'foul,' but Referee Tommy McCarthy ruled otherwise and ordered Israel to continue after a six-minute rest." (AP) Israel had been counted out, allowed to rest and continue, then knocked out once again to end the scrap. Dr. Thomas later found no evidence of a foul.

    GYPSY JOE 24-0, BEATS DIVERONICA

    Philly boxing phenom Gypsy Joe Harris won a 10-round points decision against Dick DiVeronica, on this day in 1968.

    The Arena bout was Gypsy's 24th straight win, as well as his television debut. The future looked bright for Harris, but the end of his career was secretly looming. In fact, he would only fight one more time after facing DiVeronica. In August of 1968, he lost a 12-round decision to Emile Griffith. During the physical exam for his following fight, the

    doctor discovered that he was blind in the right eye. As a result, his license was lifted and he never fought again. So today we celebrate Gypsy Joe's final ring victory, and wonder what other big bouts may have been out there for him.
