    Hurt: Johnny Cash

Has Frank or any of you fellas got the exact lyrics to the Nine Inch Nails' song, 'Hurt', recorded so memorably by Johnny Cash?

The BBC in England recently re-ran a fantastic Cash profile (one hour and no ad breaks), which climaxed with Johnny doing 'Hurt' on that unforgettable video.

    Simply magical!!

I saw that BBC documentary to, very good it was. When their on form the BBC can make some awesome pieces of TV. Credit were credit is due.

The only thing that rivels my love of Boxing is my passion for music. I have around 2000 albums and counting on a weekly basis.

The point I am making is that Hurt by Johnny Cash is one of my favourite songs and the video is truely a work of art. It reminds me of "Cry Baby" by Jamis Joplin is the sense that if you can listen to it and not get a lump in your throat and the hairs on the back of your neck don't stand up, then sorry pal but you ain't got no soul.

    Re: Hurt: Johnny Cash

    I hurt myself today
to see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    the only thing that's real
    the needle tears a hole
    the old familiar sting
try to kill it all away
    but I remember everything
    what have I become?
    my sweetest friend
    everyone I know
    goes away in the end
and you could have it all
    my empire of dirt

    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
    upon my liar's chair
    full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    beneath the stains of time
    the feelings disappear
    you are someone else
    I am still right here

    what have I become?
    my sweetest friend
    everyone I know
    goes away in the end
and you could have it all
    my empire of dirt

    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt

    if I could start again
    a million miles away
    I would keep myself
    I would find a way

Hey, KO, thank you so very much!!

Man, I've already printed out those lyrics! Share your love of music completely. My taste is wackily eclectic - Beach Boys, Floyd, Beatles, Airplane, Byrds, The Who (greatest rock 'n' roll band in my opinion - love Baba O'Reilly especially), Stones, Beatles, punk, (The Jam, Stranglers, Siouxie & Banshees, Undertones etc) you name it.

Just today, KO, I heard a classic from the eighties 'new romantics' era - 'I'm in Love With A German Film Star' by The Passions. Have you heard that one?

I tell you though, Johnny rips my heart out when he slides into the 'What have I become?' segment.

Somebody should start a "Saddest Songs of All-Time" thread.

My first nomination would be a widely-dismissed and dissed one-hit wonder from Danny O'Keefe (I think) called "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues." Who among us hasn't felt exactly that sentiment in our too-swiftly passing lives? PeteLeo.

"Hurt" - powerful song when done by Cash, and video is even more stunning. I've been listening to Johnny since I was a little kid, and he's still my favorite artist of all. Came close to seeing him in person once, he was doing a show at a casino in my area on my birthday, but couldn't get outta work and had kids to feed ect...Hey, sounds like a good song there...

Thanks, Petey. Johnny was indeed something - Mount Rushmore in motion as Kris Kristofferson said. Sorry you didn't get to that casino show!

How refreshing too that those guys grow old honestly. Kris and Bobby Dylan look like weather-beaten old cowboys these days and much the better for it!

Bloody right, Pete and Greg. And I don't care how much I get knocked for loving those songs!

More seriously, Pete, 'All or Nothing' is the one to listen to by The Faces. When Rod Stewart joined them - before dear old Rod sold out - they did a real barnburner called 'Stay With Me'.

Thanks for the nod to the Cocteau Twins, KO - 'Fotezpolitic' a great song in itself.

Madness? Yes, indeed, they were an utterly mad bunch of boys from North London - but utterly sublime.
