History of California Boxing in Photos

Johnny Gonsalves (L) vs Paolo Rosi...1959

I seen Gonsalves fight Art Aragon live in 1951 at the Olympic Aud.
    Aragon won.

    Chris,
    Nice to hear from you.

I don't know anything about Zamora, I guess he is down in Mexico.

No I don't have a pic. of Davila and Duarte together, if I ever see them in the same place I'll be sure to shoot one and post it here.

I'd be interested in Frankie's and Davila's take of their last bout. Pretty controversial... thanks Frank.

Without bogging down the thread, do you think Zamora rates with Becerra and Macias or Medel.

Yes, he sure does, I think Macias and Medel were a little above Zamora, but not by much.

For some unknown reason, probably as an identification dodge, he fought under an assumed name. His real name escapes me at present, although I do have it filed somewhere. Several Sonora, Mexico fighters took other ring names for their showings in the U.S.

He might have been a minor when he first applied for a California license under the management of old time boxer Martin Zuniga, who was once one of the better prospects developed by George Blake at the time Fidel La Barba was the stable star.

Montes had two encounters with boxing master Jesse Flores at Hollywood that were really classic boxer-versus-puncher bouts, both won by Flores. Montes had one major flaw as a fighter----he was rather slow afoot, so was usually outpointed by stylish boxers. However, he was a very good puncher, winning over any guy he could nail with either mitten.

His Johnny Depp appearance in the above photo belies his hefty hitting power.

The real name for Paulino was Jesús Porfirio López García, Paulino Montes came of Oscar Romo Kraft first Manager of Montes. He put the nickname because Oscar Romo had a Uncle with the name.

    Frank,

Do you have a photo of 1960s welterweight John Newman?

He fought from 1960-1964 and compiled a record of won 18 (KO 11) + lost 1 (KO 1) + drawn 0 = 19. His only loss was by second round KO to Curtis Cokes.
