    Kiki:

Nice of you to post those old Legion Stadium programs. I had a lot of fun writing up the copy for the Parade of Champions section every week. When the program publisher was replaced by our stadium staff, I designed the covers for three of the programs that followed up until the one they used at the time I resigned as matchmaker.

One of these days I'll ask my daughter to post other Legioin Stadium programs including the ones published in 1929, 1936, 1952 and 1955.

    regards

Re: History of California Boxing in Photos

Old Hoyt Porter....I knew him and saw him every week at the gyms and at the arenas....
he of the plaintive voice.....Hoyt Porter was part of the group of black trainers who formed the nucleus of the fight game in southern California all the time that I was in it, and even before.....such as George Moore who was in his eighties in the 1950s.

Moore had done it all as a manager, promoter, trainer, etc. up in the Pacific Northwest, where he managed boys like Yg. George Dixon and Danny Edwards, and put on shows at Portland, Oregon. His last protege of note was Reuben Smith, California Flyweight Champion who used to take on featherweights and beat them. Moore also guided Henry Armstrong in his final days as a topnotcher.

But there were many other capable black trainers such as George Tolson, Gladstone Bell, Rocky Fields, Hugle Hutson, Leo Pope, Bullwhip Manson, Duke Holloway, Charlie Williams, etc. etc. all of them experienced yet humble, and always willing to save a show at the last minute.

You could count on those worthies, believe it.

History of California Boxing in Photos

    Hap

Hoyt Porter gave me that photo about 25-30 years ago, and I'll take care of of that photo until the day that I die.

I met Hoyt in 1953 and in the late 50's he train me and my cousin Tony Adame when we fought a few amateur fights.

    Victor Burgo, en cuidados intensivos

    Burgos, en cuidados intensivos
    AFP
