Although the weather took a decided turn for the colder today, I had a good time this evening, joining my friend, Andrea, for a couple drinks at a bar/restaurant in Palatine, Illinois named Brandts, that serves THE BEST CHEESEBURGERS in the area. However, we didn't do cheeseburgers this evening.

It was a nice visit. Funny thing, though. She got texted several times by our mutual friend, Deb, who's in the hospital, and several calls from her son. Ah, the joys of cell phones, right?

Of course, being the mischievous sort, I shot a few pics with my cell phone camera, too...

I just got back from a long meeting and follow-up activities on testing.

The photo I slapped up was of ex-baseball player Jose Canseco, who--believe it or not--people used to say I looked like back in the late '80s.

Mia Rosales-St. John

Wow! I just got off the phone with Mia Rosales-St. John. I was--and am-- looking to pitch a piece on Rita Figueroa to a local media outlet regarding her upcoming fight against Mia this April 20th and wanted some quotes and background information.

Let me tell you this: Mia is very intelligent, articulate and charming. And that voice! She's very feminine, decent, and amazing on the phone. I could see why the Chicago Tribune's Michael Hirsley was obviously wowed as he was when he did a piece on her recent appearance in Chicago hyping her fight. Without being overt, her sex appeal just oozed over the phone. Maybe I'm just a dork, but my heart is fluttering still!

Anyways, I think it's going to be a good fight. Being Rita's friend, I'm pulling for her and think she has a good shot at winning. However, when it's all said and done, I hope no one gets hurt and wish both of them the best.

I also got local boxer Jose Hernandez to tentatively agree to come by the high school I work at a week from this Wednesday to speak to some of our students. Hopefully, it works out. Hernandez knocked out Jason Litzau and is scheduled to face Rocky Juarez on the undercard of De La Hoya-Mayweather.

That should go over well, because this high school is largely Latino and other minorities based in its population.

Here's a photo Karl Hegman emailed me of Rocky Juarez with Karl's friend, Topaz.

Juarez be Jose Andres Hernandez' opponent on May 5th. From what Karl said, Juarez is looking pretty tough!

I had some difficulty with the lighting and camera that night. Guess I should really study the manual, eh?

I've been swamped at work recently, and it's not going to get better in the next couple weeks. Oh well!

It's the lead photo with a piece I posted up before I left the sports complex for home.

I chatted with the famous Indiana boxer, Marty Jakubowski, a few minutes ago at ringside. This is him with his wife, Teresa, who's finishing nursing school in a few weeks.

Jakubowski's a park district director locally.

Mia lost by split decision! Wow. Dierdorff outpunched her and probably won four of the six rounds they fought.

I just talked with Brooke and her significant other, Chris, who's a light heavyweight boxer in the lobby of the Best Western Hotel a few minutes ago.

Apparently, even though she only had six days notice for this fight, she'd fought about two weeks ago in Peoria, Illinois.

Chris said that he sparred with her in preparation, bulling her around and making her come to him. Her adapting to his heavier weight helped against Mia, as coming up in weight for this fight, Brooke still came in under, at about 129 to Mia's 136, if I'm not mistaken.

Hey, that's not bad for someone with a record of 3-0 going up against a two-time champ with a record of 43-8-2 and 18 knockouts.

She'd heard that Mia's eye had swollen up really badly. She didn't have any comment or visit with the media afterwards. At 39 and a loss like this, she might have reason to contemplate her future in the game. But, who knows?

As for Brooke, she had a little bruising and swelling about the eyebrows and nose, but didn't look too bad. However, her left hand was swollen and she said that she'd have to see the doctor about it.
