I think this is an excellent matchup.
I would tend to think Cervantes but am waffling a bit on this.
Slick Defensive masters like Locche and Benitez, caused Cervantes issues (I take a Pryor over a Prime Cervantes, but in a tougher bout), but at the same time, those were the styles that would present Arguello issues.
Alexis's power was still quite formidible at 140. I think the two match up quite well here.
Cervantes by a shade in a very competitive bout.

Arguello. Once he nails Cervantes, it's lights out. Will take 10 rounds, maybe more.
Before I commit, anyone know how these two compare physically? Height, reach, etc?Originally Posted by SigniferSanctusMichael

I also would have liked to have seen Duran vs Cervantes at 140 before Roberto moved up to 147.
I suggest Duran would have killed Cervantes, in the figurative sense.Originally Posted by Elwill7847

I may be mistaken, but I suspect Cervantes might well thwart Arguello in a very close fight that goes the full 15.
In response to Surf-Bat's query, both men stood 5'10''. I know Cervantes had a long reach but don't know precisely what it was. Arguello's was 72 inches.
I'm not selling Cervantes short, and I think he could shade Alex in a very competitive matchup.

Hawk,
Sorry, I noticed your post and wasn't referring to that, but rather to the only other ones expressing an opinion, which seemed to imply a much easier bout for Alexis than I envisage. They might be right, of course; I just think they're underrating Pambele a bit.
Regards,
Sig.
I agree with you. Pambele was a great fighter and would have given ANY fighter in history from 135-140 a bad night.Originally Posted by SigniferSanctusMichael

Arguello was a dangerous hitter, but every time he missed(and Pambele could make you miss a lot) he would be met with those deadly, slashing counters. I see him cutting and lumping up Alexis badly in winning a close decision. He may hit the deck once or twice, though!
Pambele had the height, reach and tools to give Duran hell as well(Duran wins though).
