Re: Close Up and Personal: Faces in the Crowd

    That's cool.

I had a great time meeting them, too.

By the way, disaster--and comedy--struck after they left.

I'd been shooting some pics and the flash on my camera stopped working, as the batteries were running low. So, I figured I'd jump in my car and drive down to the store and be back in a minute. I didn't think I'd need my coat.

Well, about two miles away, one of my axles went out on me. I tried calling my brother at Cabs and Joe on his cell. No one picked up. I started walking back in the cold of night at 2:00 AM in the morning. I was soooo upset! For some reason, it never occurred to me to call a cab.

Anyways, two guys and a gal rode up on their bikes and offered to help. To make a long story short, I offered to pay them $20 to ride on the back of one of their bikes. They said they'd sell me one for $40.

I was freezing, so I said, "Yes...just sell me the guys bike for $40, not the girl's bike."

They said the guy's bike would be $100 more.

I said, "No way." So, I rode this girls bike about two to two and a half miles in the freezing outdoors with no coat on all the way back to Cabs.

Luis and Lisa were laughing at me when I recounted the story.

The girl's bike was a piece of crap, but, hey, it got me there.

    Anyways...

    Hey Frank,

    Nice photo!

It was good talking with you earlier this evening.

Now, I'll have "In 'n' Out Burger" wafting around more actively in my imagination. Just what I need when I want to drop some more pounds!

    Have a great day,

    Dia Los Muertos Invite

    Hey,

I keep getting these mailings from www.LatinBayArea.com , which is apparently based out of San Francisco. The latest advertises, amongst other things, a celebration of Dia Los Muertos at the Cancun Club.

Here's the photo that comes with it:

Hey, if any of you get out to that party, perhaps you can tell me about it.

    Cheers,

    Majors Junction Band at Cabs!

This Friday, the Majors Junction Band played at Cabs Wine Bar Bistro. Being the dutiful brother that I am, I shot some photos of them as they played at my brother's restaurant. They were an interesting blend of blues, rock and a touch of folksy country. I was very pleased!

Re: Close Up and Personal: Faces in the Crowd

That colour-blindness test is interesting Juan, despite the "gotcha" ending. I AM colour-blind, and I only ever found out about it earlier this year. On that test, after the first slide, I didn't see any numbers at all.

I took my five-year-old to have her first eye appointment, and the doc brought out a booklet to check her for colour-blindness. The first page was a bunch of dots like that, and he asked her what she saw. She said "a square and a circle," which I also saw. He flipped the page and I saw a boat, but she said, "a boat and a star." I was confused. On the next page I didn't see anything at all, but she saw "a horse and a triangle". The doctor saw my confusion and said, "You don't see anything do you?" I said no. He said, "You're colour blind."

I'm almost 37 years old, and I never even suspected I was colour blind. Very weird.

    Tko

    Hey TKO,

Wow! I can only imagine how disconcerting that must have been. Hmmm. I think it's so easy to take that stuff for granted.

I ran that test by an art teacher, whose color perception was very good. The last slide had her stumped and then, the surprise!

    Have a good day,

    Juan

Ring Announcer Joe York Now Writing for Us!

    Hey,

Good news! Popular ring announcer Joe York will be writing for the CBZ. Joe's a terrific guy with a great sense of humor and a warm heart for people.

I smile when I think about our conversation several months ago when I invited him to write for us at the WoodHollow Bar and Grill in Merrillville, Indiana. Joe split this awesome pizza with me and shared some fascinating stories, prompting me to make that request. Thankfully, he took me up on the offer!

Here is his first piece for us:

    Joe York's First CBZ Article

    Enjoy!

    My "Two Sheds" Experience Yesterday...

Today, I've got a stuffy head, courtesy of helping a friend put up a metal shed in her back yard. She, her parents, and her sister were also involved in this suprisingly challenging task.

It was pretty cold throughout. However, we also endured wind, some rain and a pesky neighborhood dog that barked intermittently. Of course, we joked about making the day the stuff of urband legend, adding to our recounted stories comments about snow, attacking killer squirrels and the like.

Funny thing was, my friend had an old, dilapidated shed at the corner of her back yard which she hadn't torn down yet. The way my mind works, I was reminded of an old Monty Python skit on Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson. I shared this thought with my friend, who found it mildly amusing, adding that she may some day be known as Sarah "Two Sheds" (last name withheld).

Of course, being the silly person that I am, I Googled Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson and found a transcript of the skit, which I will be forwarding to her, and share with you as well:

Interview with Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson from Monty Python's Flying Circus

Host (Eric Idle): Last week the Royal Festival Hall saw the first performance
of a new symphony by one of the world's leading modern
composers, Arthur 'Two sheds' Jackson. Mr Jackson.

    Jackson (Terry Jones): Hello.

Host: May I just sidetrack for one moment. This -- what shall I call it --
    nickname of yours...

    Jackson: Ah yes.

Host: "Two sheds". How did you come by it?

Jackson: Well, I don't use it myself, but some of my friends call me "Two
    Sheds".

Host: And do you in fact have two sheds?

Jackson: No, I've only got one. I've had one for some time, but a few years
ago I said I was thinking of getting another, and since then some
people have called me "Two Sheds".

Host: In spite of the fact that you only have one.

    Jackson: Yes.

Host: And are you still intending to purchase this second shed?

    Jackson (impatient): No!

Host: ...To bring you in line with your epithet?

    Jackson: No.

Host: I see, I see. Well to return to your symphony.

    Jackson: Ah yes.

Host: Did you write this symphony in the shed?

    Jackson (surprised): No!

Host: Have you written any of your recent works in this shed of yours?

Jackson: No, no, not at all. It's just an ordinary garden shed.

Host: I see, I see. And you're thinking of buying this second shed to write
    in!

Jackson: No, no. Look. This shed business -- it doesn't really matter. The
sheds aren't important. A few friends call me Two Sheds and that's
all there is to it. I wish you'd ask me about the music. Everybody
talks about the sheds. They've got it out of proportion -- I'm a
composer. I'm going to get rid of the shed. I'm fed up with it!

Host: Then you'll be Arthur 'No Sheds' Jackson, eh?

Jackson: Look, forget about the sheds. They don't matter.

Host (sternly): Mr. Jackson, I think, with respect, we ought to return to the
    subject of your symphony.

    Jackson: Huh!

Host: I understand that you used to be interested in train-spotting.

    Jackson: What?

Host: I understand that, about thirty years ago, you were interested in
    train-spotting.

Jackson: Well what's that got to do with my bloody music?

John Cleese (entering): Are you having any trouble with him?

Host: Yes, a little. Good Lord! You're the man who interviewed Sir Edward
    Ross earlier.

Cleese: Exactly. Well we interviewers are more than a match for the likes of
    you, "Two Sheds".

Host: Yes, make yourself scarce, "Two Sheds". This studio isn't big enough
for the three of us! [They throw him out.]

Jackson: Here, what are you doing? Stop it! [Crash.]

Cleese: Get your own Arts programme, you fairy!

Host: Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson... Never mind, Timmy.

Cleese: Oh Mike, you're such a comfort.

    Some Photos from Holyfield-Oquendo

    Hey,

I got back from San Antonio, Texas yesterday, as I covered the Fres Oquendo-Evander Holyfield fight for the Carol Stream Examiner. During my stay, I visited with CBZ contributor Karl Hegman and Kevin, his ex-brother-in-law and buddy.

Here are some pics I shot while there.

Re: Close Up and Personal: Faces in the Crowd

As you can see, I screwed up a couple settings in the focus and set the speed too low at the bar. I borrowed my friend, Tom Glunz's Canon EOS D-something or other camera and was just getting familiarized with it.

For instance, I accidentally made the focal point to be high iin the frame for Autofocus when I was trying to find another setting, which made for some interesting shots, especially in the sports bar. Notice, for instance, how the De La Hoya poster is in focus behind Karl and I?

    Oh well...

    Latest Fight Report

    Hey,

I thought you might enjoy this link below, which takes you to my latest fight report, one covering--amongst others--Rita Figueroa (AKA Fightgirl) and her bout against Mary McGee.

There's a lot of photos, including some fun ones from the after party.

Also, it's notable that I ran into one of my former students, who is now in charge of economic development for Merrillville, Indiana, where the fights were held.

    Enjoy!
