    Great Day at the Beach!

Yesterday was simply a wonderful day spent at the Indiana Dunes. I spent the day with a very cool friend--who's a little gun shy of Internet exposure--and had what had to be my most enjoyable day this summer.

Here are some pics I shot.

My friend walking along the shore looking for shells

A father and daughter walking by Lake Michigan late in the afternoon

My friend's hand and mine photographed against the backdrop of some clouds

My friend said it was okay to post this pic up, so here it is, dinner at nearby Popolano's restaurant afterwards in Chesterton, Indiana

I still get a kick out of this modified pic I did of dinner...

Hey Juan: How much weight have you peeled off so far? The difference in the photos is pretty obvious. Good job, man.

    Hi Todd and Karl,

    Thanks! I appreciate that.

Todd, I've lost 30 lbs. so far. I've still got more to go, but I appreciate that.

Karl, she's a real sweetheart. Time will tell...

    Fireworks in Fox River Grove

By the way, here's a snapshot I took with my cell phone that I shot when we attended a post Fourth of July party in Fox River Grove, Illinois. Every year, they shoot off a top notch fireworks show following the Fourth of July just over the Fox River. It was a lot of fun!

George Gershwin Concert at Ravinia Park!

This Saturday, my friend and I went to see a wonderful concert at Ravinia Park in Highland Park, Illinois. It was incredible and packed beyond belief! We parked several miles away in special parking and shuttled in via bus. When we got in line for the busses, the line had to be over 100 yards long!

However, the wait was well worth it, as the entertainment value and performances were the best!

    Beautiful Evening in Fox Lake

After church, swimming and sunning in Evanston, on Sunday, we went to El Puerto, a Mexican restaurant in Fox Lake, Illinois. The restaurant is situated right on the lake, with docks for boaters to come on in.

What can I say? The food was terrific and the ambiance very relaxing and wonderful!

    In 'N' Out Burgers...

    Hey Frank,

That's funny! And, yes, I do miss good old In 'N' Out Burgers. Wow.

I've been pretty good about the eating lately, as well as running (I logged in several six mile runs last week, as well as some weights and running on the treadmill). However, we really laid out quite the spread for Ravinia. We packed some hummus and pita chips; tomato, fresh basil, mozerella cheese and olive oil (yum, especially when using fresh vine grown tomatoes and some coarse sea salt sprinkled in); a proscuito and mozerella roll; carrot cake and some Chilean merlot from Trader Joes.

    Anyways, now I'm getting hungry...

    Have a great day,

    Juan

Summer Fun at AlpineFest in Lake Zurich, Illinois

    Hey,

My girlfriend and I went to AlpineFest in Lake Zurich, Illinois last weekend. Wow! What a blast. There's something very summery about outdoor festivals like the one we attended. There were rides, games, food, and a couple bands playing that made for a lovely summer eve's entertainment.

Good job on the diet and exercise! You can't argue about results with these photographs; you are clearly in much better shape than when I last checked this thread. Keep up the good work!

    The 'Look of Love'

    Hi Gary,

Thank you! I definitely like her, and vice versa! She's a real sweetheart. It's been really nice spending time with her this summer.

We've both been hurt in love, so we're trying to take it slowly. It's challenging, though, because we have a lot of chemistry going. Wow!

Anyways, she was off work today, so she helped me paint my boathouse, which was really cool. Last week, she helped me strip and primer it. So far, so good!

My boathouse to the right of the pic, shot during the winter

And Kid Achilles, thanks as well! I've been making an effort to keep up the running, although I've admittedly been slacking a bit with the weights. The diet's going okay. Right now, I'm running around five to six miles several times a week. I think the real challenge for me will be when school resumes and I take classes towards my Masters.

Anyways, thanks a bunch, guys! I appreciate your kind words.

    Have a great day,

    Juan

This is me back in 2001, right after my second fight.

Myself giving the term blown up welterweight a whole new meaning fighting my "comeback fight" in the super-heavyweight division back in March!

This is how I look right now, I've dropped more than 20 lbs training hard.

    Buds for Life...

    Joe (left) and Juan

This is a good buddy of mine, Joe, who's been friends with me since 1992 or 1993. We've had a lot of laughs catching up lately. Here we are at a place in Schaumburg playing on his laptop computer and, in the third from last pic, via my cell phone camera. The last two shots were taken with my Kodak Z-whatever it is digital camera...

That's me on the laptop computer

Chicago Heavyweight contender, Fres Oquendo and his son, Fres Oquendo, Jr.

I've got an upcoming interview/piece on Chicagoland heavyweight contender, Fres Oquendo, which I conducted at his son, Fres, Jr.'s football practice and, later, at his home. Here's a photo I shot on the field earlier in the evening.

Here's another with his son (no. 66 on the helmet, 57 on the jersey) practicing...

A Night to Remember with Diaz and Oquendo at Cabs!

    Hey,

I just finished posting a huge array of photographs from a dinner party we threw for David Diaz at Cabs Wine Bar Bistro in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Diaz recently won the WBC Interim Lightweight Title.

Former amateur teammate and current heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo and his wife joined David and Tanya Diaz, along with a slew of Friends and acquaintances for a night of fun and celebration.

During the evening, I presented Diaz with a letter of congratulations from WBC President, Jose Sulaiman.

Needless to say, it was a night to remember.

Here's a link to a photo documentary I posted up on the evening:

Hey Rita, I wish you and Mike could have made it! Ditto for you, Rudy Cisneros, Jose Hernandez, Miguel Hernandez, David Estrada and others.

Fun Shots at Fres Oquendo's Home...

By the way, here are some cool pics at Fres Oquendo's house from several weeks ago:

I shot them when I came out to do an interview with Fres, a portion of which will appear in this week's Carol Stream Examiner.

Re: Close Up and Personal: Faces in the Crowd

    Hi Juan!

Since you are from Chicago area, I want you to know
that I was saddened to read that six kids were killed
in an apartment fire in your home area a few days ago.
If it is true that the inhabitants of the apartment were
using candles because their electricity has been shut
off in May or there weren't any smoke detectors,
there is going to be hell to pay.

Hope that all is well with you and your lady friend. Keep
up with your great work posted on the CBZ.

Re: Close Up and Personal: Faces in the Crowd

Thanks, Chuck! I appreciate your kind worrds.

Yeah, the story of the six kids passing is very sad, indeed! In a way, it's incomprehendible to me.

As far as my lady friend goes, we're definitely friends right now. Whereas I care very deeply for her, she's not really ready for a serious relationship. So, she remains my bud.

Quite honestly, I have had the hardest time with that, which may account in part for the hyperactivity with the interviews as of late, as well as late nights with friends like Joseph (see previous photos) and others.

I've also slacked off on the running for the last couple weeks. However, that's going to change quickly! I really want to begin training for the Chicago Marathon a year from now. We'll see if it happens...

Thank God for school and my classes resuming. Be that as it may, she has my support and friendship--and vice versa, which I am grateful for.

Anyways, I think you'll enjoy my upcoming interview with Roberto Duran, which will be coming out in the next issue of "Wail!" any day now.

Have a great day, my friend,

DJ'ing Last Weekend at a Party

    Hey,

Last Saturday, I DJ'ed a birthday party out in Crystal Lake. It was fun, although it got a little chillier in the evening.

Afterwards, several of us hung around a fire and caught up on old times.

    Hey, have a terrific weekend,

Carol Stream Piece on Fres Oquendo

By the way, the Carol Stream Examiner ran a piece I did this Wednesday, which I posted up at the CBZ Newswire page with their permission. It's on Fres Oquendo:

    Soccer Mom Article

I met with the Examiner's editor yesterday and he wants me to do other feature pieces. For instanace, they want me to do a piece on a local elderly writer of some notoriety with ALS, Louis R. Schavie. Here's something they forwarded me on the guy:

    > PublishAmerica Presents The Big Horn Incidents by Louis R. Schavie
    >
    > Frederick, MD August 30, 2006 -- PublishAmerica is proud to present
    > The Big Horn Incidents by Streamwood, Illinois author Louis R.
    > Schavie. The Big Horn Incidents is a story about a majestic place,
    > nestled in the valley of the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. Itís a
    > guest ranch with log cabins, surrounded by big ponderosa pines. Two
    of
    > the owners are tenderfoots from the East. The third partner is Jack
    > Riley, a cowhand who manages the facilities and activities. The
    > tranquility of the ranch suddenly changes when two terrible incidents
    > happen. One is ruled an accident, the other a suicide. Riley enlists
    > the help of an old friend to investigate the tragedy. The plot
    > thickens as the investigation swerves through winding curves, with
    > more disasters and victims along the way.
    >
    > Louis R. Schavie served three years in the Air Force. He was a
    > successful barber until diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic with Lou
    Gehrigís
    > disease. He changed professions and became superintendent of a
    > wastewater facility in Hanover Park, Illinois. Now retired, he writes
    > and battles A.L.S. each day.
    >
    > PublishAmerica is the home of 20,000 talented authors.
    > PublishAmerica is a traditional publishing company whose primary goal
    > is to encourage and promote the works of new, previously undiscovered
    > writers. Like more mainstream publishers, PublishAmerica pays its
    > authors advances and royalties, makes its books available in both the
    > United States and Europe through all bookstores, and never charges
    any
    > fees for its services. PublishAmerica offers a distinctly personal,
    > supportive alternative to vanity presses and less accessible
    > publishers.
Also, if all goes as planned, I'll fly out to cover Fres' fight with Holyfield for the Examiner as a follow-up piece to the "Soccer Mom" article.

    Cheers,

    At Porters to See 'Libido'!

Some friends and I went to see a great local cover band, "Libido" at Porters Oyster Bar in Crystal Lake, Illinois. The company was excellent, the music great and the evening just what I needed after a tiring week!

Would you believe these two were mother and daughter?
