Cleveland WILLIAMS
Hello Mike,
This is the famous fight where according to Box Rec Curly Lee is knocked cold by Cleve Williams yet is throwing punches in the air as he is on the canvas. Supposedly Williams was administering a severe battering to Lee prior to the knockout. I was told by the late boxing writer Jim Brady that Curly Lee would later be convicted of murder for killing 2 people with an axe. The action was somehow related to the damage he suffered in the boxing ring. But to answer your question this was a televised bout Pabst or Gillette but I have never seen nor heard of this fight surfacing. However is could exist somewhere.
Regards
Mikey Capp
Curley Lee suffered brain damage in this fight. Thirteen years later, he attacked his wife and her brother with a crowbar. The wife escaped with injuries but he killed the brother. Then he went inside his house and drowned his 4 young children in the bathtub. Then he tried to kill himself by drowning himself in the same tub.
When the police arrived, he said "Come in -- if you can stand it."
He was found NOT guilty by reason of insanity -- the Judge specifically citing the Williams fight as having caused his brain injury.
Lee was rushed into the Williams fight, having subbed at the last minute for an injured Sonny Liston. He was losing the bout, true, but after being decked in the fifth, he had won both the 8th and 9th rounds, making the bout close. A minute into the tenth he was on the canvas, his life changed forever.
Mike:
Talk to Steve Lott of Big Fights. If asnybody has that fight it's him. He dug up the 1962 Dick Tiger-Henry Hank fight for me.
