Jack Johnson called him the greatest fighter of all time. Great footage. I think I can detect a bit of his Island accent here and there......
Langford said in his entire career no one ever hit him harder. Imagine that from a 5' 2" welterweight ?
I believe Mr. Walcott died not so long after this footage was shot, unfortunately.
This clip opened my eyes a few years ago when I first viewed it, as it corrected the popular pronunciation of Joe Choynski's name: from CHOYN-SKEE to KO-INSKEE, which is of no small import to some of the lunatic boxing historians here in the NYC-area!

Great footage .... though I thought he was sat on the crapper when it started!
I agree. For years I have mispronounced Choynski's name and am glad to finally get it right.Originally Posted by Kyoodle
Speaking of which, I've always been troubled over Billy Petrolle's name. Wish I had some footage of an opponent saying his name. Is it pronounced Pe-TROLLE(silent "e")? Pe-TROLLEE? PET-rollee? I've read that the latter is correct. Until I hear someone who knew/fought him say it I just don't know.
Bump
Anyone know??
Doug:
I recall seeing some footage of an elderly Ray Arcel discussing some of the fighters he had handled, and when speaking of Barney Ross he mentioned Petrolle. I kinda remember him pronouncing it "Petro-LAY". Then again, it WAS quite a few years ago, and at this point I'm not as sharp as Ray was in that interview.

I seen that footage for about 4 years ago. Nice seeing Walcott speak.
Sad to see such a great fighter like Walcott end up as a jantior at the Garden.
Regardless of lack of fight footage, he is ONE of the pound for pound greats.
Thanks Scott. That makes sense. Though I must say I do like the sound of Pet-TROLL best!Originally Posted by Kyoodle
