Larry Holmes, Singer!
By John G. Rodwan, Jr.
First it was Evander Holyfield on ABC "Dancing with the Stars," now comes Larry Holmes on VH1's "But Can They Sing?" The cable music network announced this week a new series that will feature the former world heavyweight champion competing as a singer with the likes of Kim Alexis, Morgan Fairchild, Bai Ling and others. Over the course of six weeks, the audience will vote on which of the total of nine celebrities has demonstrated real singing ability. Contestants on the reality show will first train with vocal coaches as well as a dance instructor. Holmes (69-6, 44 KOs) – the second longest reigning heavyweight champion after Joe Louis and who nearly matched Rocky Marciano's record number of consecutive wins (Holmes had 48, one less than Marciano) – has some experience as a musician. He performed with a soul band named Marmalade, which once appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman." According to a Sports Illustrated profile, the former champion acknowledged, "I'm not that good of a singer.… But it was fun." Starting October 30, TV watchers can see if they agree with that assessment.
