Peter Kane, Jackie Patterson and Rinty Monaghan: Forgotten or Forgettable?

I collect boxing memorabilia... it keeps me from spending money on bad things like... well, you can imagine... I buy a lot of stuff relating to the three above-noted fighters... I like them a lot... I don't know if they were all-time greats, but each was, for a time, the flyweight champion of the world back in the days (why I even mention this when 99% of the posters on this board dwarf my boxing knowledge and know this already) when there was one champ per division, and only 8 weight divisions... or 10, if JWW or JLW are counted...

Anyways... your thoughts on these three British fighters? One from England, one Scotland, and one from Northern Ireland...

Re: Peter Kane, Jackie Patterson and Rinty Monaghan: Forgotten or Forgettable?

I'd say they were ALL damn good fighters! Kind of amazing that three guys from the U.K. would between them hold the flyweight title from 1938 to 1950.

Of the three, Kane has the most spectacular record. Patterson had a lot of losses in his career but look at his competition. Rinty somehow overcame chronic bronchitis to become a world champ.

Kane was definitely an all time great fly but Patterson & Rinty are definitely in the conversation.

They are definitely forgotten but they are JUST as definitely not forgettable.

But in the end, the majority of even great fighters, end up forgotten in the bloody mitts of time.

Well said Gor -- but what do you make of that 1 round KO loss to Patterson in Kane's only title defence?

And, the million dollar question for me, are these three men "Hall" worthy?

By today's lowered standards I'd say Kane & Rinty are HOF worthy. Patterson because of all the career losses probably not.

As to that 1 round KO, hey it happens to the best of them. Anybody can get caught cold in the 1st round.

Re: Peter Kane, Jackie Patterson and Rinty Monaghan: Forgotten or Forgettable?

I think the weight must have had something to do with the KO of Kane, but I haven't read or heard that it was... he certainly didn't seem to hang around flyweight after that...

For me, despite the fact I love my Liverpool boy Kane, and empathize with the alcoholic Patterson, Rinty is number 1, followed by Kane, then Patterson... I'm still pondering their "Hall" worthiness... let's say I'll take it under advisement...

No one else with any thoughts on this extraordinary threesome? Love to hear from some of the British CBZers...

BTW, if you throw flyweight world titlists into the mix, as opposed to "world" champs, Jackie Brown and then (earlier in his career before he won the "undisputed" title) Benny Lynch, and I should add in Terry Allen (1950), you have Brits controlling the flies from 1932 to 1950!

we are setting up a new site later this year with our own domain name which will be far more easy to locate us.

Peter Kane

Born Peter Cain in Heywood , Lancashire, 23 Feb 1918, his family moved to Golbourne, just outside Heydock when he was aged 3. As a schoolboy we worked as a blacksmith, a job he continued for most of his career. This gave him tremendous upper body strength, an asset that he used to good effect when he stopped all of his first 13 opponents.

He had his first paid fight at the Liverpool stadium when he was 16 and his all action non-stop style made him a great favourite wherever he appeared. He won his first title in 1937 – the Northern Area flyweight crown – before stopping the Irish champion Jim Warnock before a 35,000 crowd at the Anfield football ground – the home of Liverpool Football Club – in a World Title eliminator.

After 41 consecutive wins (33 of them stoppages) he lost for the first time to the champion Benny Lynch who stopped him in the 13th round at Shawfield Park Glasgow in October 1937 in front of a 40,000 crowd. His great performance earned him a return fight five months later, but Lynch failed to make the weight; the bout was reduced to 12 rounds and resulted in a draw. Lynch was 6 ˝ lb over the limit.

The following year Lynch forfeited his crown, and Peter Kane defeated the American Jackie Jurich for the vacant crown. His manager Ted Denvir had readily agreed and the Liverpool Stadium manager Johnny Best joined forces with Belle Vue ( Manchester ) resulting in a 35,800 crowd – some estimates put it over 40,000 – at the Anfield ground. A record for any Mersey crowd.

Nel Tarleton had joined Peter’s camp and was his chief sparring partner . Jurich was on the defensive for much of the fight in an attempt to keep the hard-hitting Kane at bay but to little success. Kane – a great favourite in France where he was known as Le Petite Forgeron – dropped Jurich in round two for a count of nine with a punch so hard it was to damage his knuckle. The damaged finger was later to be amputated .

However, before he could cash in on his laurels World War two intervened and he joined the RAF. The NBA proclaimed the Filipino, Little Dado, as champion in 1939 but nobody – including Dado – took the distinction very seriously. When some 5 years later after winning the title in his first defence he was knocked out in 61 seconds by the Scot Jackie Paterson at Hampden 19 June 1943.

Kane seemed finished but two years later surprised the boxing world when - after moving up to bantamweight - he won the European bantamweight title from Theo Medina of France. He defended it successfully against Belgian Joe Cornelis then lost it to Guido Ferracin of Italy. Following another loss to Ferracin and to Liverpool’s Stan Rowan in a British bantamweight title eliminator in Manchester, he announced his retirement aged 30.

Frank -- thanks for posting that program pic -- I've actually been looking to buy it for a while -- where did you find it?

BTW, looks like we're not the only admirer of these old time British flies -- some of their autos went for big $$$ on e-bay!!!
