Luis Angel Firpo Vs.Primo Carnera

How would this match held up, between two big guys. would the wild bull of the pampas prevail, or would the The Ambling Alp's out jab him. I think Luis Firpo (who was the Max Baer of his time) had enough to pull out a come from behind K.O against the giant from Italy.

Primo seemed to have better boxing skills, but he always was meat for a puncher. I think Firpo crushes him. Unlike Baer, once he hurt Carnera, Firpo wouldn't clown around and enjoy his time on the world stage. I see it ending in under three with Carnera on the floor five or six times. PeteLeo.

Re: Luis Angel Firpo Vs.Primo Carnera

I think Primo would give Firpo some problems and it would probably go six or seven rounds before he nearly takes Primo's head off with a huge right hand punch.

Primo could box well for such a huge proportioned man, regardless of how clumsy he looked jumping rope, and he had heart. Primo may be one of the most underrated heavyweight champions. He's regarded as a complete bum but I say he was superior to say Michael Grant or Jameel McCline IMO.

His big downfalls were a lack of a true heavyweight punch, and killer instinct. The guy just did not enjoy fighting. In a technical sense I think he was one of the better schooled heayvweights at 6'5" or over.

I agree. If you really study film of Carnera, the guy actually had very decent boxing skills, a very nice punch repetoire for a giant fighter, and pretty quick reflexes for such a massive man. The guy also had the best stamina of any fighter 6'5 or over I've ever seen. His one big drawback was his lack of a knockout right hand. If that had been the case, he would've gone a lot farther than he did (and he still won the HW championship with several solid title defenses)

I think Luis "Angel" Firpo was basically Max Baer w/ better reflexes, better stamina and a better natural killer instinct. Consequently, I think Firpo beats Carnera in the same manner that Baer beat Carnera-- only faster.

That said, though, I agree that Carnera is under-rated a little.

I also have seen film of Carnera. I don't think I ever saw a champion so easy to hit. The only chance Carnera would have is if Firpo got tired from wiping his ass. I could be wrong, but that's the way I see it.

Re: Luis Angel Firpo Vs.Primo Carnera

Firpo was overrated in my opinion. What good fighter did he beat? Willard was like 40 and shot. Maybe one other guy who was way over the hill, like Brennan. Dempsey he went to war with, but he still got dropped like 7-9 times and could only throw wild windmill haymakers and just happened to get lucky with one, which he should given that he was 215-220 fighting a guy 188. Carnera on the other hand fought a much better level of opposition, had some skill, a decent jab, and did last a lot longer against better opposition.

Where on earth do you get Firpo having better reflexes and stamina than Baer??? Going by the film Firpo is extremely ponderous and has little iota of boxing skill. Baer could be crude but vs Schmeling he did show he could box fairly well on a good night, put nice combinations together to the head and body and use an effective cross-armed defense. Firpo only showed he could block punches with his face.

I rate Uzcudun higher than Firpo.
