Michael Spinks vs John Conteh

Could Michael flatten John early or would John take Michael the full 15 and make it a fight?

Re: Michael Spinks vs John Conteh

No, John would lose this one though i doubt anyone would be getting flattened early.Spinks did not exactly cover himself in glory against Eddie Davis and it took him a while to get going against a weakened version of Mustapha, those two being the best boxer-punchers he went up against.

I'm not a big backer of Spinks as having been head and shoulders above all of the 70s light heavies and feel there was an element of coming around at the right time( as many fighters were fading or losing dedication)to his extended run at 175, but he WAS a great fighter with range, awkwardly effective boxing ability and excellent power.

I don't think Conteh did enough to justify picking him over Michael, though i'd take Galindez over Spinks for the upset.

The John Conteh of 1974-1976 would be even money with Spinks, Guess I'd lean slightly towards Spinks but wouldnt be suprised if Conteh beat him.

I'd favor Spinks as well. He could be outboxed on occasion, but he KOed almost all the rated fighters he faced, plus he did much better against the best version of Qawi than Holyfield did against a lesser version of Qawi.

Conteh has a slim boxer's chance here, better than none, but mighty slim nonetheless.

Good match up, but I Like Michael Spinks by a late ko in tougher than expected fight.

I'm with Roberto. Mike Spinks was the best of the late '70s/early '80s light heavies and that's saying A LOT. Conteh was a solid fighter, also a champion, and his slickness might bother Spinks as others' did. But, Mike always found a way to win (usually by KO), and Conteh isn't the guy to beat him, I feel.

As to Galindez, due to styles . . . always styles . . . I like Spinks by KO. Galindez got hit, and with Spinks that's lethal. His dirty tactics would be met by same, if necessary. He does have the proverbial puncher's chance. But, as I recall, no one ever even decked Michael, except for a heavyweight, Tyson.
