Who Lies There? A Compendium of Boxer's Obituaries by Mike DeLisa & Johnny Bos

wholies (83k image)

Over 100 pages of obituaries of boxers, fighters, managers, and promoters. The gamut runs from the most famous to the most obscure. Complete obituaries are reprinted, and serve as an immense guide to furgter research for the boxing fan -- or as a bet-settler for the true stat geek.

Learn of the sad end of Gene Tunney opponent Wolf Larson, who once stole a milk wagon (horse and all) and tried to pawn it for a bottle of hootch. You probably never heard of Jack LaFontise, who dies while attended by his brothers, pro boxers themselves, but you won't forget his story.

Some of the nation's besst sportswriters describe the end of many of our boxing heroes and villains -- Gene Tunney, Sugar Ray Robinson, Kid Chocolate, Jack Johnson, Benny Leonard, Harry Greb, Jem Ward, Bob Fitzsimmons, Joe Jennette (Jeanette), Al Palzer, Benny Bass and hundreds of others.

Which boxer died after drinking carbolic acid? Who died while making moonshine whisky when his still exploded? Who drowned? This book answers all of these questions.

The Rush to 100

I’m not getting hurt - well, very rarely. Every now and again you come up against somebody that is a bit different. I think you will find that in any walk of life ---Peter Dunn

Light middle weight Peter “Desperate” Dunn, out of Pontefract, Yorkshire in the UK generally fights once or twice a month and has been doing so since December 12, 1997 when he beat a bloke by the name of Leah Daniels by points in a six rounder. Daniels retired with a 1-1-1 record. Dunn’s current record stands at 12 (KO 0) - 97 (KO 11) - 4 in 113 bouts and he shows no signs of slowing down..

In a monster understatement, young Brit boxer Stuart Kennedy, 2-0, recently said he was not bothered about giving away a lot of experience. ”It'll be good to go in against a lad [Dunn] who has been round the block and knows the tricks of the trade.” (Ian Laws-Sunderland Echo).

Where Are They Now?
Vito Antuofermo

By Shawn M. Murphy

Recently it was my great pleasure to speak with former World Middleweight Champion Vito Antuofermo. Antuofermo was born in Italy, later moving to the United States. Antuofermo was a New York Golden Gloves Champion as an amateur, and won the World Middleweight Championship in 1979 over Hugo Corro. After a defense over Marvin Hagler in a controversial draw, Antuofermo lost the title to Alan Minter by split decision. Antuofermo, known for a tendency to bleed, would also lose rematches later to Hagler and Minter via TKO’S. Well known fighters he would beat included Emile Griffith, Bennie Briscoe, Denny Moyer, Willie Classen and Eckhard Dagge. After a loss in 1985 to Matthew Hilton, Antuofermo retired with a record of 50-7-2.

(SM) Mr. Antuofermo, how did you get your start in boxing, was it in Italy or the US?

(VA) I started as an amateur in America at age 17. I had a very good amateur career. I won the Golden Gloves title in 1970. In 1971 I was defeated in the finals by a guy named Eddie Gregory (Eddie Mustafa Muhammad) Eddie was a future Light- Heavyweight Champ and a big puncher. I did beat him the year before that loss.

Carlos Molina Wins in Tacoma

Molina (left) and Armstrong trade hooks

A packed crowd filled the Emerald Queen Casino’s I-5 showroom in Tacoma, Washington this past Saturday, June 28th for the 66th installment of Brian Halquist Productions’ Battle at the Boat. In the main event, Vancouver, Washington’s Cedrick Armstrong (7-2 2KOs 152 lbs.) took on Chicago, Illinois’ Carlos Molina (11-4-1 4KOs 152 lbs.) in a ten round bout. For Armstrong the bout marked a step up in two ways. Not only was the bout the first scheduled ten rounder of his career, but he was also taking on a fighter with more experience against quality opposition. In the end the experience of Molina played a major role as he displayed some solid boxing acumen in scoring a unanimous ten round decision over the local favorite

From the outset of the bout Molina employed a measured approach, using his jab to control the distance and occasionally stepping in with crisp left hooks and right hands. Armstrong began to press forward in the second round, throwing wild, winging punches to Molina’s head and body. Molina found more openings as his opponent pressed the fight, capitalizing on Armstrong’s tendency to drop his hands after punching in combinations. He continuously caught Armstrong with hard left hook counter-shots to the head. While Armstrong did manage to make the first half of the fight close, landing on occasion with hard hooks to the head and body, Molina remained effective with three and four punch combinations on the inside, carrying the first five rounds.

Affliction Banned Hits New York's Times Square

Press Release

SIGNAL HILL, California (July 1, 2008) – "Affliction Banned", the greatest MMA event ever staged, hit New York City's Times Square last week, as the faces of ten of the sports biggest stars, including Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko (27-1) and his opponent Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia (24-4), filled a billboard along Broadway. All will appear on the July 19th event at Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and distributed live on Pay-Per-View.

"Considering the magnitude of this fight, and the partnership between Affliction and Donald Trump, it seemed only fitting that the huge talent pool on the 'Affliction Banned' show should be seen by millions in New York's Times Square," said Tom Atencio, Vice President, Affliction. "You know it's a big show when you have a billboard on Broadway."

Real Exercise Newsletter: Summer Fun without the Fat!

By Glen Peavey
Co-Owner of Real Exercise Gym

ReeeeelEx (119k image)

Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it. ~Plato

Summer time means one thing – it's barbecue time!

While outdoor cookouts are a great opportunity to relax and visit with friends and family did you know that the average barbecue meal exceeds 1500 calories? That's almost an entire day's worth of calories in one meal.

That can really added unwanted inches to your waist line over the course of the summer.

The good news is that barbecue season doesn't have to be fattening. In fact, with a few small changes to your barbecue menu you can turn summer into the perfect opportunity for weight loss.

So before you slather on the sun screen and fire up your grill, read the following tips to lighten up this summer.

On the Grill: Believe it or not, grilling is actually a very healthy way to cook meat. Of course the type of meat that you choose will make all of the difference. Burgers and hot dogs are traditional barbecue meats, though they aren't the healthiest. Try the following:

Choose lean cuts of beef, pork or poultry
Marinade with low fat dressing
Make hamburgers with extra-lean ground beef
Take the skin off chicken before grilling
Replace beef patties with ground turkey patties
Grill up salmon or cod
Forego the meat and grill veggie burgers

Duddy Shuts Out Game Howe Over 10

By Pavel Yakovlev at ringside

duddy1 (302k image)

BOSTON, MA - "Ireland's" John Duddy won a one-sided decision over Charles Howe tonight, topping all three scorecards by margins of 100-90. Duddy’s left hooks to the body and head had Howe in deep trouble repeatedly throughout the bout. Howe, however, showed considerable resiliency and defensive acumen, and as a result he was able to survive until the final bell.

Duddy, 158 ½ lbs., was on the attack throughout the fight, constantly forcing the action with his aggressive left jab. Howe fought the entire match in a defensive posture, always keeping his guard high, rapidly retreating whenever under pressure, and clinching anytime Duddy came close.

As in his past fights, Duddy used his flashy left hook effectively, doubling and tripling the punch while throwing it to the head and body. In the second, fifth, sixth, eighth and tenth rounds Duddy had Howe reeling, and on each occasion it appeared the match might be only seconds away from ending by knockout.

Diaz (left) attacks Pacquiao

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Blood streamed down the right side of his face from a one inch cut over his eye. Right hooks, straight lefts and uppercuts slammed into his head over and over. Still, he kept moving forward. As early as the fifth round, some people in the press corps were calling for them to halt the brutality. Yet, in the end, it took a smashing left hook to the jaw he didn't see coming to terminate the championship of World Boxing Council Lightweight Champion David Diaz in the ninth round.

His conqueror, highly-favored and rising 130 lb. champion Manny Pacquiao had won a title in his fourth weight division, but he had to earn it the hard way. And he did just that in convincing fashion.
