MARCUS PERNELL INJURED—RECOVERING

By Katherine Dunn

News from Ray Lampkin, trainer and manager of light heavyweight Marcus Pernell, who is Lampkin’s step-son. Marcus Pernell just had surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, OR to repair a torn retina in his right eye. The doctors say he should heal completely in a few months.

This scratches Pernell out of his scheduled June 16 bout against Otis Griffin in Sacramento,CA, and also eliminates his participation in the July 20 show in Portland.

The injury apparently occurred in sparring. Immediately after a workout this week, Marcus noticed that his vision in that eye was cloudy. He went to the opthomologist immediately.

This does not necessarily endanger Pernell’s boxing career, though doctors warn that it depends on how he heals. Surgical treatments for eye injuries have improved amazingly in the last few decades and just keep getting better. The precedent setter was Sugar Ray Leonard who had surgery to repair his torn retina and was then refused a license to box by the state of Nevada. Leonard sued Nevada and won, establishing the pattern that if the eye docs say you can box the Commission can't refuse you on those grounds.
