Former World Champion Murdered
August 16, 2004 - According to local news reports, around 4 a.m. on Monday, August 16, former world champion Robert Quiroga was pronounced dead in his hometown of San Antonio, TX due to multiple stab wounds. According to police, a passer-by flagged down a police officer to inform him that Quiroga laid next to his vehicle, helpless on the Interstate 10. Quiroga died on the way to the hospital. Police have not apprehended any suspects at this time. Quiroga, 34, was known as 'Pikin' or 'Little hot pepper' for his scrappiness in the ring. He beat Juan Polo-Perez on April 21, 1990, in England to win the IBF super flyweight title. He went on to make five successful title defenses before retiring in 1995. He finished with a 20-2 record and 11 knockouts.
Quiroga will be best remembered for his unforgettable war against “Kid Akeem” (a.k.a. Akeem Anifowoshe) on June 15, 1991. The showdown between the two then-undefeated fighters has been recognized by many boxing experts as not only a “Fight of the Year” but one of the best fights ever in the super flyweight division.
