Press Release - Godfrey relinquishes 3 title belts

PROVIDENCE (August 15, 2007) – Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. (CES) president Jimmy Burchfield announced today that Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey and his manager, Brett Hallenbeck, have agreed to relinquish his NABA, USNBC and WBC Continental Americas cruiserweight title belts.

Godfrey (16-0, 9 KOs) will retain his NABF cruiserweight championship. He is rated No. 2 by the WBC, as well as No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, by the IBF and WBA.

“Matt has his sights set on a world title,” Burchfield explained. “He wants to give young fighters an opportunity to fight for these three title belts he’s been so proud to wear.”

Photo of the Day: Cruiser Prospect Aaron Williams KO'ing Porter

By Juan C. Ayllon

AarCol1 (87k image)

Cruiserweight prospect Aaron Williams, shown above knocking out Terry Porter at the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill. on April 18, 2007.

"Stike while the iron's hot," goes the saying. And cruiserweight prospect Arron Williams is on a hot streak, winning his last three fights by knockout or stoppage, bringing his overall ledger to 14-0-1 and 10 knockouts. However, as is usually the case, not everyone is cooperative in these matters.

His co-manager, Pat Doljanin said, "We got an offer for Aaron to fight Alfredo Escalera (14-0, 11 knockouts) on ESPN 2, Aug. 24th. Escalera turned the fight down and we're trying to call him out. He's the son of the former world champion of the same name."

Two undefeated cruiserweight sluggers--what's not to like about that? This bout sounds like a natural fit for ESPN2. Why not make it?
