Buenos Aires (CBZ) - On October 11, Oscar "Ringo" Bonavena, who was murdered in May 1976, will have a monument dedicated in his honor, in front of the headquarters of the Club Huracán, where he was a member. The celebration will include a party for the residents of Patricios Park, Buenos Aires, where Bonavena was born and raised.
Bonavena, one of the most charismatic boxers in history, first came to notoriety by fouling out of the finals at the 1963 Pan Am Games when he bit his opponent. Today, he is best remembered for his non-title bout with Muhammad Ali in 1970. Ringo lost that fight by technical knockout in the 15th round. He also fought Joe Frazier twice, losing two decisions, but floored Frazier twice in their first bout.
Among those participating in the tribute to "Ringo" will be ex-world flyweight champion Horacio Accavallo as well as cruiserweight Marcelo Domínguez, whose figure served as model for the statue. Many other celebrities will participate, including soccer trainers Carlos Babington and Alfio Basile, who were friends of Bonavena.
