Heavyweight Bomber 'Big' Steve Collins returns to Auburn Nov 17th!

Press Release

event_poster (114k image)

Indiana’s own Prodigal Son, heavyweight prospect “Big” Steve Collins returns to fight in front of his hometown fans for the first time in four years as he headlines Cameron Parks’ Rock Solid Promotions big evening of boxing on Saturday night, November 17th in the Cord Building at Kruse Auction Park.

Collins (15-1, 12 KO’s) is considered by many experts in professional boxing as one of the brightest young heavyweight stars in the country, and the storied athlete from Garrett is determined to keep his hot streak going when he once again enters the squared circle at Kruse Auction Park in the Main Event of the evening.

“The great novelist Thomas Wolfe once said, you can’t go home again,” says Collins, “but the truth of the matter is that I never really left Indiana, as home is where the heart is.”

Collins possesses a big right hand and jolting left hook and has dispatched twelve opponents in brutal fashion, and the Indiana native is supremely confident that he will make it “Unlucky 13” for his foe on the six bout card that is sure to bring fistic fireworks and ring excitement for those fans in attendance.

The aggressive puncher has been working very hard in the gym and putting in his homework on the road every morning, and is primed and looking forward to another ten count knockout.

“I want to give my best effort for the fans on November 17th,” says Collins, “Indiana folks are hard working, good God fearing people who deserve to get their money’s worth, and I’m going to make sure they get it when I’m in the Main Event as Saturday night’s all right for fighting!”

Tickets are available at Pancho Kelly’s, Martin’s Tavern, and Garrett State Bank. To order tickets by phone call (260) 444-8733.

Ticket prices are reasonably priced at $25 General Admission, and $40 & $50 for ringside seats.

See you at the fights!

Boxing Returns to Caldwell, Idaho

By Ricardo Ibarra

RicardoPoster (84k image)

Once a regular venue for professional boxing, the Caldwell Events center in Caldwell, Idaho has not hosted a fight in years. In fact the fight scene itself has laid idle in southern Idaho for some time now. Thankfully for fight fans that changes this upcoming Saturday October 27th as the sport makes its return to the area with a six bout card featuring some of southern Idaho's best.

The main event features the return of Caldwell's own, and one of Idaho's most promising prospects, undefeated Mario Hernandez (8-0 3KO's) in an eight round bout. Hernandez has spent the last year fighting in the state of Texas, taking on some of the toughest club fighters in that region. Most recently he scored a unanimous decision over tricky southpaw Anthony Vasquez. He is scheduled to take on fifteen year veteran Jorge Alberto Reyes.

Reyes has fought some of the games best including John Michael Johnson, Robert Frankel, Anthony Peterson, Antonio Davis and former world champions Johnny Gonzalez and Danny Romero. Reyes has a lot of experience against top tier opposition and should give Hernandez a good test.

Also on the card, Edgar Hernandez makes his return to the ring against always entertaining and always tough John Red Tomahawk in a six round Jr. Middleweight bout that promises to deliver fireworks. Hilario Lopez of Parma, Idaho will take on William Deets in a five round welterweight match-up. Miguel Albares and Jeremy Drapel will fight in a six round featherweight bout.

In a four round Jr. Middleweight bout amateur stand-out David Lopez, fresh off of an attempt at making the American '08 Olympic team in the Olympic trials, makes his pro debut against Jess Salway. Also making their pro debuts, Cristobal Garcia and Robert Quintana will fight in a four round welterweight bout.

The Caldwell Events center, formerly the O'Connor Field house, is located at 2207 Blaine Street, Caldwell, Idaho. The doors open at 6pm, first fight starts at 7pm. Tickets can be purchased in Caldwell, ID at the Fiesta Guadalajara Restaurant or Garcia's Tex-Mex Grill and in Napa, ID at El Centro. The event is being promoted by R&B Promotions, for more information call 208-440-1122 or 208-608-1910.

Dubious Dancing Precedent May Be Good News For Hatton

By Pete Ehrmann, Historian

Ricky Hatton take heart: The last time a world champion boxer mixedballroom dancing and training, he lost his title to a challenger from your sideof the pond.

San Francisco's Willie Ritchie won the lightweight championship from AdWolgast in 1912. A year or so later, Ritchie hurt his foot and couldn't run. On February 26, 1914, he told The Milwaukee Journal, "I tried every doctor in 'Frisco, but they were unable to help me. Then I took to dancing thetango, and it did the work. Now, instead of doing roadwork, I tango for four or five miles every afternoon, and try to put on the turkey trot for two or three miles every evening."

Ritchie went on to "recommend this training stunt to prospective champions." Several months later, on July 7, 1914, he lost the 135-pound title to Freddy Welsh, a native of Wales.

This week, welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. got voted off thepopular ABC-TV series "Dancing With The Stars." His friend and advisor,Leonard Ellerbe, told ESPN that Mayweather had done "the impossible" bycombining ballroom dancing with his training for Mayweather's December 8title fight against Great Britain's Hatton.

Hatton fans who believe in omens may now kick up their heels.

POST FIGHT QUOTES
Joe Mesi: “I’m pleased. Obviously any quick ending to a fight is pleasing. A made a few mistakes; it had been a few months since I’d last fought. I was still surprised. Shannon is durable and courageous. I didn’t expect this (1st round KO). I didn’t want to expend too much early, but I guess I expended enough. This was my first fight for CES and Jimmy Burchfield. I think three more fights, stepping up each time, and I could be in line for a title shot. I hope to be back in the top 10 soon. I feel like I’m getting back to where I was. My timing, conditioning, and weight are all back.”
