CBZ—Hungarian light-heavyweight boxer Andras Nagy, 23, died this morning following a brain injury suffered while sparring in Melbourne, Australia.

“He was a very talented boxer. His death is a terrible tragedy,” Hungarian Boxing Federation president Sandor Csotonyi said.  “[He] took part in the senior World Amateur Boxing Championships when he was 19 years of age. He turned professional because of financial problems, which I am very sorry about,” Csotonyi said. (continue reading…)

Nehomar Cermeño Returns July 11

Interim WBA Bantamweight Champion Nehomar Cermeño returns against Cristian Mijares on July 11 in Laredo, Texas.  Cermeño beat Mijares by split-decision on March 14, and remains unbeaten in 17 bouts.

The bout was locked up after Anselmo Moreno, the WBA Bantamweight Champion, scheduled a July 4 defense against Mahyar Monshipour in France.

The rationale behind an interim title bout in this instance eludes this reporter.

R.I.P. Scott Papasodora

Former boxer Scott D. Papasodora, 50, died Monday, April 6, 2009, in Minneapolis.

Papasodora (his name was mispelled his entire career) was born Jan. 11, 1959, to Samuel and Evelyn Papasodora in Minneapolis. Papasodora began boxing at the age of 10, in Minneapolis, going on to to win several Minneapolis Golden Glove titles. He also won the National Indian Boxing title representing the Leech Lake Boxing Club, as well as the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves title.
