HOUSTON, November 30, 2011–

Fighter Of The Year:  Marlen Esparza

marlen1An easy pick here.  The United States Amateur Women’s Flyweight Champion captured her sixth consecutive national title and represented and won for the USA in international competition. Esparza was the subject of a groundbreaking CNN documentary, Latino In America 2: In Her Corner.

Fight Of The Year:  Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. TKO 5 Peter Manfredo

Junior leaves a lot to be desired as a fighter, but he makes for exciting, albeit, sloppy fights.  It was nice to see HBO boxing return to the Bayou City again.

Trainer Of The Year:  Ronnie Shields

Shields trains current Interim WBA Super Bantamweight Champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and looks to solidify the title in December vs. Rico Ramos.

Manager Of The Year:  Bob Spagnola.

Spags did a masterful job in guiding Austin Trout to the WBA Light Middleweight Championship.

Prospect Of The Year:  Mercedes Manriquez

The hard hitting featherweight reminds me of Alfonso Zamora and should have an exciting career as a pro. Mercy does not need to be banging out anymore Humpty Dumpty’s, though.

Promoter Of The Year:  “Big” Lou Savarese

The former IBA Heavyweight Champion has turned the Houston Club into an exciting boxing mecca here.
