In one of the biggest wins of his career, battle tested journeyman Dashon “Flyboy” Johnson scored an upset win Saturday night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, securing a ninth round TKO over local fan-favorite Mike Gavronski and annexing the vacant WBA-NABA US Super Middleweight title in the process.

Headlining Brian Halquist Productions’ 103rd Battle at the Boat, Johnson and Gavronski fought a rematch of a bout held in January of this year in which Gavronski took a unanimous decision win. In the return bout, Johnson overcame Gavronski’s rangy style to claim an assertive victory. (continue reading…)

The Battle at the Boat series at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington has remained a staple of northwest boxing for close to two decades now, holding steady as the most consistent show in the Pacific Northwest. As it closes in on it’s monumental 100th show, the series continues to bring great fights to the savvy northwest fight crowds and remains one of the longest running series of boxing shows in the country. This past Friday Brian Halquist Productions presented it’s 99th installment of the series to a sold out crowd, featuring some of the best talent in the area in well-matched, entertaining fights.

In the ten round main event the region’s top Super Middleweight hopeful Mike Gavronski added his second consecutive win since losing for the first time last July with a unanimous decision win over late sub Dashon Johnson. Gavronksi was originally scheduled to face crafty Californian prospect Louis Rose, but with just one week to go for the bout, Rose pulled out, leaving Gavronksi without an opponent. Luckily Johnson, who is a much better fighter than his record would suggest, never shies away from a challenge, and quickly jumped at the opportunity to face the tall and rangy Tacoma native. Thankfully for fans, he took the fight as they were treated to an entertaining ten rounds between two solid professionals. (continue reading…)

TACOMA, WA, January 7th 2015 — It’s fight week in Tacoma, and with a last minute change to the main event, Friday night’s card for Battle at the Boat 99 is locked in and ready to go. Going live from the Emerald Queen Casino at 8:00PM, this special Friday night edition of the northwest’s premiere boxing promotion will feature the best in up and coming local talent.

The main event of the evening will see Tacoma’s own Mike “Imagine Me” Gavronski (15-1-1 10KO’s) vs. Dashon “Fly Boy” Johnson (15-18-3 5KO’s) in a 10-round bout. Johnson will be filling in for Californian Louis Rose, who withdrew from the card due to personal reasons. With his wealth of experience in the ring, Johnson will prove to be a tough test for the talented Gavronski. Gavronski is coming off the biggest win in his career, defeating Gerardo Ibarra at the EQC in November. (continue reading…)

Leading up to the 97th installment of the long running Battle at the Boat series at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, the card encountered more problems than are usually the norm. Problems can always be expected when putting on a boxing show, but in this case both the main event and co-feature that had been originally planned fell apart and, with days left for the event to take place, the Halquist Productions team was left scrambling to pull together an acceptable main event. I

t came down to the wire, but on Wednesday night they pulled it together with what on paper looked like a very interesting match-up between a seasoned journeyman and an up and coming young prospect. In the ten round headline bout crafty once beaten prospect Louis Rose (11-1-1 3KO’s 168 lbs.) took on the highly experienced Dashon Johnson (15-16-3 5KO’s 167 lbs.). (continue reading…)

His Son Stopped on the Undercard

By Ricardo Ibarra

Former world lightweight champion and one of the best fighter ever to come out of the Pacific Northwest, Greg “The Mutt” Haugen, made his first foray into the promotional side of the boxing business under the banner Haugen-Cintron-Canin Promotions last Saturday night at the Vision Quest Sports and Fitness in Auburn, Washington. Presenting a stacked seven bout card, Haugen and company put on a highly entertaining, well matched show with seven quality fights featuring some of the best young fighters in the region

In the main event, unbeaten heavyweight Jonte Willis (6-0 3KOs 207 ½ lbs.) scored a third round TKO over Corey Williams (4-10-2 2KOs 268 lbs.). Willis, who hails from Tacoma, Washington, had been on hiatus for over a year but did not show any obvious signs of ring rust. He quickly went to work in the first round, unloading thudding jabs and digging in to the body with hard right hooks. Williams, of Denver, Colorado, fired back gamely but failed to land anything of consequence. (continue reading…)
